Soo in August I'm going to Nigeria for 2 1/2 weeks and it's hot/sunny there so I was wondering what you guys would suggest to prevent me from getting a tan like are there creams? Thanks 😊

Sunblock! Has to be sunBLOCK, not sunSCREEN/CREAM. Factor 50+ or higher, and reapply every hour, especially when in water :) this is what we do for the 2 year olds at my work :)

Thank you Hannah!

Yes sunBLOCK! Sunscreen is absolutely awful for you. Also try and prevent over exposure or spending too much time exposed to the sun around 10am-3pm because that is the time when the Rays will directly hit you. Try and cover up as much as you can with clothes as well. Airy clothes such a maxi skirts/dresses and chiffon materials are awesome

My Micro teacher actually suggests SPF 100. He say NOTHING can get through that layer.
But I look forward to that darker golden summer look every year :)

I am very fair skinned and when I went to the Mayan riviera last year I was super nervous that I was going to get a sun burn. I did a lot of research on sunblock and ended up choosing this product called Badger Cream. It's biodegradable and won't harm eco systems, 100% natural and 94% certified organic, and is made up of only 5 ingredients total. I used this stuff daily while I was on vacation and didn't burn or get tanned at all. I highly, highly recommend this stuff if you are looking to avoid getting a tan while spending a lot of time outdoors. The 5 ingredients are non-nano uncoated zinc oxide, organic sunflower oil, organic beeswax, organic jojoba oil and sunflower vitamin e. A very simple and very effective product. I bought mine from REI but you can also get it online.

Besides sunblock (which I don't think even really can prevent tanning but I could be wrong, I forgot what my derm said) covering most of your body with long sleeves, using a parasol and staying in the shade, there's not much you can do. I do know of a good lightening product you can use if you do get tan though, it's called Kojie-san skin lightening soap. I think it's only like close to 7 bucks on Amazon and it doesn't contain bleach. The main ingredient should be Kojic acid which lightens your skin and is a product of rice fermentation. Also, I heard eating more food containing L-Glutathione will prevent your body from creating more melanin!

Wearing tightly woven clothing will block out some UV but its not 100%. I haven't been to Nigeria but I have been to South Africa (Cape Town) and Zimbabwe. All I wore was light colored clothing and applied sunblock every two hours...still came back a shade darker from head to toe. Didn't bother me in the slightest because within about 3 weeks I lightened back up again. Definitely stick to wearing either cotton or linen so your skin can breath. Synthetic material will have you feeling as if you're baking in an oven. Some products worth checking out...Loreal Silky Sheer Face Lotion SPF50 (it doesn't appear ashy and darker skintones and for that reason I love it), SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF50.
