If you get outbreaks frequently or they are particularly bad when they happen, your doctor can prescribe Valtrex (generic: Valcyclovir) to prevent or lessen their duration. I take it as soon as I feel that tingling and it helps prevent the outbreak or lessen the severity and duration. Over-the-counter products like Abreva can help reduce symptoms, but won't prevent an outbreak.

All of the advice above is accurate. Also be sure not to kiss others or touch the sore without washing hands immediately after, because the virus is most contagious during an outbreak. Be aware that you can transmit the virus at any time, however, even without symptoms. Most adults (up to 90%) are already infected, but many never suffer an outbreak or redcurrant outbreaks.

I haven't found anything that actually reduces healing time significantly for me short of a prescription. In my experience it heals when it heals. There are things I can do to reduce the discomfort and that about it. I have found that by keeping my lips well moisturized and protecting them from sun exposure I can reduce the amount of them I get. I used to get them constantly, now it's once or twice a year.

I don't care what ANYONE says, but I use black tea bags, run hot water over it, squeeze out the excess water, put on the cold sore for 30 minutes, then put carmex on it, and it's gone by morning.
I swear by it when I get them. If I do the tea method, I only get cold sores twice a year. If I try anything else it'll be at least 3-4 times a year.

Dabbing pepto bismol on a cold sore also helps speed up the healing. It sounds crazy but it does work.

Crushed aspirin with lukewarm water will do the trick also - along with ur cold sore meds -
There is absolutely NO method that will help for it to be gone in a day - sorry does not exist - take it from a derm -
Try && keep lips from lipstick && lipgloss this tends to make ur lips very dry - balm & Chapstick will help - don't pick at it either as this will take forever to heal and the possibility of spreading -
Good luck

They key is heat. It's best not to use warm water cause it will blister. Cut a hole in a paper towel and place over the cold sore, then, using a hair dryer, apply heat for as long as you can stand it, and apply neosporin or some sort of antibiotic ointment. Sounds crazy, but I promise it works!
