Hey girls, help!! I feel so so sad I just want to kick myself!! So... I just qualified in college in fashion and photographic makeup and I loved the course I really enjoyed it, I will try and get some of my work up later. But I feel I am getting nowhere I need someone to point me in the right direction! I have worked on a Audrey Hepburn breakfast at tiffanys photo shoot and a 1950s Photoshoot and that is literally it! I want to get my name out there but I feel I am no good! I always put myself down so I end up just giving up and I really don't want to, as I LOVE makeup! I find I don't have enough tools either as I have two young daughters so money is tight. I have a kit and brushes and bits of urban decay, Mac, illamasqua and Ben bye products but not a lot. So feel like I can't advertise as I can't afford to buy all the good makeup and brushes. Urghh! Sorry I feel better now I have had my rant though 😊️xx

If you wanted to invest in some good brushes, I'd suggest Real Techniques, Laura Geller or BareMinerals brushes. I love mine :)
Your work is AMAZING!

Photographers are your friend. Even if they're just starting out, so are you. Collaborate. You, the photographer and the model should all be interested in free services to one another so that each portfolio benefits. I've used model mayhem before, but you can look/ask around Facebook for photographers and models interested in working together. Then once you have a portfolio to show off, other models and just people in need of makeup services can see what you do and your name will be more exposed via the web.

It sounds like you don't have a lot of confidence in your work. That's the only thing you are lacking. Your work is really good. Keep practicing. Work on whoever you can, whenever, even if it's yourself. Personally I don't think you need "high end" products, especially if you're just starting out. Just make sure you have a variety of colors. Start posting on social media, and don't be afraid to "brag" about your work!

Collaborations are key!! Ask local photogs if they'll do TFP shoots - trade for print - it'll build your portfolio and help you network! Keep in mind there's not much money in the beginning!

I'm not a makeup artist myself but Samantha Randall (batalash beauty) has a really good video on networking on her YouTube channel.

Thankyou for all your advice ladies, it means so so much!
Jacqueline, thanks for your advice much appreciated. I'd just like to add though I was not feeling sorry for myself I was merely asking for advice about how to get into it, I left college and that was that, they gave you no insight of what to do next what direction to go to get my career started. That's why I feel deflated, so that's why I'm thankful for everybody's advice.
I have just worked with a photographer doing a shoot and he gave me pics for my portfolio, he is going to work with me again also. So that's a start. 😊

Good brushes don't need to be expensive! You could always go for bh cosmetics or real techniques and I would still recommend advertising and becoming a free lancer makeup artist until you find a steady job and you could always apply for a job to be a MAC makeup artist. Start building up your portfolio and put all the different looks you do in it and you're so talented you're bound to get a job!

Luke c, there's no need to be so rude! If you have nothing positive to say don't comment.
