This is a VERY NEW problem, as in for the past 2-3 weeks. This has never happened before and the pictures don't even do it justice. My foundation (Estee Lauder Double Wear and/or Makeup Forever Matte Velvet) separate or flake on my cheeks, nose and chin. I moisturize with Cetaphil lotion, and I have about 5 different primers that I've attempted. I've used a beauty blender, all sorts of brushes and different techniques, even my fingers! This happens literally within 5 minutes of putting my makeup on, and it gets worse as time goes on. I can use a setting spray or powder and it'll still be blotchy and weird or just slide off. It didnt start happening with any new products or anything like that, these are all tried and true.
It looks like it's just dry skin, but it's oily to the touch. it's very strange.
HELP!! What could be causing this? Is there anything else I can try to remedy this?? I've had to cancel dinner with my future in-laws 3 times because I looked so awful.

This is in daylight. I have numerous other pictures. and these were all taken within the first 10 minutes of application.

I had the same problem at one point. I had to change my skincare regimen (especially for winter). I started using Clinique dramatically different moisturizing lotion and it works wonders.

Also, I don't think it's your makeup or application. It seems like a skin problem. What is your current routine?

I was using Neutrogena(sp?) oil-free face wash and exfoliating regularly with St. Ives green tea exfoliating scrub, then using Simple light-moisturizer. But like a week ago I switched to all Cetaphil products (wash and moisturizer) and exfoliating gently with a wash cloth.

That has been happening to me too. I'm using kat von d foundation I loved it but I don't know why its doing that. I was going to go to sephora to get a new foundation but demetria might be right I hope more people answer. Sorry I wasn't much help I'm in the same boat.

Cetaphil products are very drying as well as Neutrogena (for me). That may be the problem. I use the cetaphil facial cleanser but I absolutely have to use my Clinique moisturizer or my skin is doomed.

Thanks so much, demetria! I'll definitely try that!

Also using the same moisturizer for to long makes the skin get used to it and it stops working.

I'm not a MUA but I am an esthetician and I agree that it seems to be skincare related. I would definitely suggest going to an esthetician because with out seeing it in person and most importantly feeling your skin it's hard to say exactly what the issue is. however, it's very possible your skin is dehydrated. Your skin TYPE may be oily but a skin condition could be dehydrated, which can be changed and is caused by external factors ie environmental factors (cold, pollutants, etc) and products used on the skin. it's best to treat for dehydration first because it's a condition and can be changed then manage your skin type with your products. I had bad dehydrated skin with this winter and I've been using dermalogica barrier repair which protects & acts as a barrier to the environment & it really had helped with my makeup sitting on my face better and the flakiness around my nose and between my brows (it can be worn alone or as a primer under makeup & really gives a smooth application ). I would also suggest using a hydrating mask and more intensive moisturizer in those areas. when I've had clients with this issue with oily skin I'd use 2 masks and moisturizers one for oily and one for dehydration in those areas. hope this helps! sorry for the rambling lol.

Sarah, thanks so much!! I will definitely make that happen. I greatly appreciate the knowledge. I had no idea that could be cause! I work at home and my house is SOOOO DRY, I get nose bleeds regularly. Recently bought a humidifier, so that may help change things. Again, thanks so much!

I know you are getting a lot of products tossed out at you, but I really like Paula's Choice and have found the hydrating repair masks (which you can get samples of online) to be really great for healing dry skin emergencies, especially if you find the dermologica products give you sticker shock. If you upgrade to a new moisturizer, get one with antioxidants, that soaks in quickly. I didn't think anti oxidants were that big of a deal until I switched to a drugstore moisturizer that didn't have them. My dry patches came back with a vengence. The anti oxidants will help you layer moisturizer and help the skin absorb the moisture you are putting on there which explains why the skin feels moisturized to the touch, but isn't really. Your nose looks exactly like mine all the time, not just the winter. I get that patchy dryness there. It's not so horrific that you need to cancel your dinner plans, lovely.

My absolute pleasure! if you have any questions you can message me. I can't believe I didn't mention what Demetria said, WATER! so important. And I agree with Jenny Paulas choice masks are great as well, you definitely don't have to use Dermalogica or any specific brand at the moment it's all trial and error I would just suggest treating the dehydration separately and if you never dealt with this it'll require new products possibly if that's what the problem is. Hopefully all these answers help and you are able to find something that works for you!

That would happen to me bc I would mosturize before priming and then applying my Lancome Idole Teint foundation. But then I found out I didn't need to mosturize bc my Lancome Base Pro primer isn't meant to be worn after mosturizer. So you should check if your primer is water or silicone based.

I agree with Sarah! My foundation was doing the same thing and it's because your skin is sucking all the water out of your foundation because it's dehydrated!

Thanks everyone, so much!! And Jenny, the pictures above are truly the best looking it has ever been. About a week ago it looked like that but all over my cheeks and chin as well. I'm not 100% sure what I did to fix the rest of my face, but it's my nose that is killing me right now. I will definitely be taking all of your advice and getting a anti-oxidant filled moisturizer and a good hydrating mask. THANKS SO MUCH, LADIES!!

I am so into oil lately. It's not cold in my area (So Cal) but very dry and jojoba oil is great because it's the closest to our natural sebum. It's noncomogenic. I also like Argan oil. My skin is so soft since I started using it at night before bed.
