I've tried all types of products, but expensive and drug store. Right now I'm using a combo of things that has dramatically reduced my dark spots and kept my breakouts at bay: Paula's Choice 2% BHA (Salicylic Acid) Liquid (this is a chemical exfoliant), Avalon Organics Vitamin C Serum (got this from Whole Foods), Paula's Choice Resist Dark Spot Eraser 2% BHA. Also, during the day I wear moisturizer with SPF 30. This combo of products is much cheaper than some stuff I've used in the past yet waaaay more effective and I'm so happy with the results!

If price isn't an issue, I agree with Jacqlyn that a professional treatment is the best option. Jacqlyn, if you have deeper scars you should try sublative rejuvenation (ematrix) versus laser resurfacing. I've had a few laser resurfacing that did nothing but really good results with ematrix. I also want to get a VI peel as the results look amazing. I think the best way though to get rid of dark spots from acne is Retin A. If the scene scarring is just dark spots, they will eventually lighten, but it takes a while. Deep scars are so much harder to treat. I haven't had bad acne since my teens and I'm 33 and I still am trying to get rid of it completely Lol.

It depends on your skin type and how old your scars are - my skin is actually pretty good at repairing itself so I just needed to help it and I used the products Mallory suggested - 2% BHA exfoliant by PC paired with her vitamin c serum and it really helped - I have photos on my page of my progress I can post one here too.

This was after 2 months of using the stuff - left is newer right is older.

Maggie is right on. Deeper scars call for a much intense treatment that typical topical treatments can't provide. I used AHA (from Renee Rouleau) serum to clear up my acne scarring and it took awhile but in the end it was worth it. I do have one deep scar and I struggle with going the pro route to remove but as a person with a deeper skintone using lasers of any kind is risky (even those being approved for darker skintones).

Going to a professional is definitely best I wish I could afford that! BUT I do have to tell you about mario badescu vitamin c serum. I have been using it every night for only about two weeks and I am amazed at the results. I read some good reviews on it but I've tried a lot if products with good reviews that seemed just okay. But this honestly has been a miracle worker for my skin. All my scars are pretty much completely gone. My pores are tighter my skin smoother and glowy. And I haven't had any new pimples. Granted my acne had already cleared up drastically with only the occasional pimple. And my scarring was not bad just some flat red hyper pigmentation. But this product still has transformed my skin. Very much worth $45!

Mederma has gotten rid of a lot of my dark marks. I apply it at night & I also use a SPF every morning.

I have hyper pigmentation on my upper lip- looks like a mustache and makes me crazy!! My first dermatologist prescribed Obagi, which worked great but then the spots came right back. My new dermatologist has me using the Lyterra skin system and I am seeing a slow, gradual improvement. I've been dealing with this problem for two years and I'm about ready to get them lasered.

Professional treatments like laser resurfacing, chemical peels ,and less evasive microdermabrasion, will always be more effective that topical treatments of course and you see benefits more quickly however if you don't have pits or deep level hyperpigmentation you can clear hyperpigmentation with chemical exfoliaters , retinol, Vitamin C and brightening peptides or if your not against using hydroquinone , which most dermatologist will recommend, but not for prolonged use.

I loved my hydroquinone (Obagi) it worked great for a few months and then it just quit. I was so sad. My dermatologist said it works fast but it's not long term. So I'm really leaning towards laser therapy.
