I really want to get a purpley red or something ombré done to my hair soon and wanted to know if I was going to have to bleach my hair to do so? Does that mean I'll have to book 2 hair appointments or can they do everything in one go?

Since you don't want it so vibrant, I recommend Garnier Nutrisse dye, it's for dark hair only and it works amazingly. Of course, at the salon, they'd probably do something else. I always do my own hair at home.

What colour should I go? I've never dyed my hair before

Red would look great actually. Or a burgundy purple color. I don't remember the names but I know they have those shades for sure.

Would I need to bleach my hair?

If your hair is black, yes you'll need to bleach your hair at least to a dark orange shade to have these colours. One session at a hairdresser should be enough to get your desired colour in one go.

With Garnier nutrisse you wouldn't need to bleach your hair unless you're going for the picture destiny suggested. But for the ombre you posted, garnier will do the trick without bleach, that's why it's for dark hair. & if it's not as vibrant as you'd like, you could dye it again and it wouldn't do much damage as you think.

You won't have to dye your hair using the loreal hicolor permanent highlights :) I've gone to a deep burgundy like that to a bright fire truck red in one go, no bleach. Well, the dye has bleach, so it lifts and colors. Like I said I've gone to a similar color and even to a fire truck red in one go, no prior bleaching. However, if you want ombré, I'd go to a salon so it'll be blended correctly. They're not that easy to do at home AND get them to look right.

You won't have to *bleach*, not dye, I meant in the first statement.

Personally I do not recommend doing an ombré yourself especially because this is your first time dying your hair.

I'm a hairdresser and so you know if your hair in dark they bleach it first then put the colour on after the bleach has processed and rinsed. your hair will go an orange colour if uou have colour build up already. after they put the red the orange will go.

I have dark brown hair and I have loads of red highlights. My hair weren't bleached before getting it done. They only bleach dark hair for light colours. Yes, without bleaching it, it does last a little less. But for me it's been seven months since I got it done and it's almost like it was when I got it done :)
