I'm seeing a doctor next week for my skin issues; acne, scarring, white/black heads, oilyness.
I've had some pretty bad doctors in the past that only try to push their products and treatments on me, none of which have actually asked to see my skin without makeup before recommending this.
So what are some questions I can ask or things to note when seeing the derm to make sure they're a good choice for me?

Make sure they're communicating with you, asking about your skin issues/concerns and previous treatments/prescriptions. If they want to prescribe you something or suggest an over the counter product ask them why and how it'll affect your skin. If you don't understand something then ask them to clarify. Communication is key, regardless of the type of doctor or specialist you're seeing, so if they're not talking with you and don't seem invested in your skin's well being then that's probably not the dermatologist for you.

Alexis nailed it. Couldn't have said it any better.

I would also suggest going without foundation

I'm going to the appointment straight from work so I'm going to be wearing makeup. I would think they would have makeup removers in their office though, if their clinic specializes in skin care.

They might not, I personally would take make up remover wipes with me just to make sure

I agree with Gisell, just take makeup wipes just in case. Even if they do have their own makeup remover you wouldn't want to risk it irritating your skin with their products.

Okay so when you go there, I'm sure he will ask you a bunch of questions, but be sure to tell him why you came there and what products do you use at home. Are your menstruations regular or not (hormonal acne?), if you take any pills, have any health problems, had operations. Do you drink enought water or smoke/drink and how often. Do you drink coffee more than two times a day.
Also tell him if you have any alergies and have you had medical treatment for your acne before and what you did. Did you expose your skin to sun and if you tan easily. Do you use spf and have some dry spots on your face or if you scar easily.
These are all important questions he should ask you if he's really good, so be prepared for that. Come without makeup also (because makeup wipes will iritate your skin before you go in + they're not really good for your skin) Good luck :D
