It doesn't have to match, but in my opinion if the colors aren't similar it doesn't look very good.

Hey don't have to match exactly, but if you want the same color as the lipstick you have, its better to get a similar color because it might change how the lipstick looks if the lipliner's really different, for example if you're using a bright red lipstick and a dark red liner, it'll turn out a lot darker than the lipstick. Also if the color is different (I do this even if its the same) line the outline of your lips and the inner part as if it were lipstick so there's not a different color line outlining your lips or anything :)

They don't have to match at all! Mixing is the whole fun of it! And if you wanna try out ombré lips they're totally in.

Not at all easiest way to do an ombre lip. MAC nightmoth with velvet teddy in the middle is one if my fave combos and those are two completely different colors

Nope unless you're wanting your lipstick to last longer but still want the color to be the same. I always use a darker lip liner under my more pale nude lipstick because it changes the color to something that won't make me look dead lmao.

Ooh Renay those are 2 things on my wish list for the next time I hit the mac counter. Could you maybe post a pic of that combo? I google imaged it but every pic I click on is not actually that combo?!:(

I like to use a liner that is close to my natural lip color. It makes it easier for me to " cheat" my lip size. I love MAC subculture. It's my go to with almost any lipstick or gloss.

No normally some people use a shade darker and blend it in their lips before putting lippe on if your not blending it on then it will have to be close or it'll look abit werid.

No I match lip liner to the natural colour of the lip..
