I have the same problem. Using lemon and/or both help to lighten spots. And yes, exfoliating is important. another thing that has helped me is using baking soda.

DO NOT USE LEMON OR BAKING SODA.
Baking soda is a chemical that should not be used on the skin and it will cause damage.
Lemon throws off the skin's natural pH balance and kills healthy skin cells.

I'm an esthetician, and no, baking soda and lemon won't harm your skin. They're both natural and are lightening agents.
