Just because I'm 41 years old and going thru menopause doesn't mean I receive the free get of jail card when it comes to acne. I just recently acquired an unwanted visitor in the form cystic acne...just one big whopper dead center of my forehead. Looks like I have a 3rd eye. LOL.
Cystic acne goes deep into the skin ( its essentially an infection). It creates this flaming red bump that is loaded with pus and it hurts something fierce. It can strike anywhere on the body. In women its often caused by hormonal changes (thanks menopause). Making this one of the hardest forms of acne to treat. The healing time is slow and tedious and the rate of scarring is quite high if one is not careful.
When this sucker said HELLO I immediately switched out my usual line-up skincare soldiers for team gentle. Gentle cleanser free of sulfates and using a salicylic acid (BHA) based exfoliant in the form of a serum at night. For daytime I will apply a benzoyl peroxide cream on the offender only and my moisturizer is a lightweight gel-based lotion.
Its been a long time since I had cystic acne...and while its forced me to switch up my cosmetic use as well I'm confident that as long as I stick to my battle plans hopefully this sucker will wave the white flag soon and give up the fight.
Once I felt it coming on I halted use of my usual skincare program and pulled out team gentle skincare. A basic gel based cleanser for nighttime use and my African Black soap for morning.

@Shelley I sometimes get them on my chin area. OMG they hurt so bad. Smile, laugh or frown and they hurt. I learned to just leave mine alone because I scar so easily. I might apply a warm towel for the pain. Mine sometimes occur around my monthly. What products do you use when you get them.

All the products I listed above is actually stuff that my husband formulated in his lab. But the benzoyl peroxide cream you pick up anywhere from the drugstore to Target. Gel based cleanser...Simple Refreshing Facial Wash Gel and the BHA...Paula's Choice seems to be very popular with folks. Simple also has a gel based lotion as well. And avoid applying any makeup over it as well. I scar easily as well so I have to tread very carefully. I rarely get cystic acne but when I feel a spot coming on I can usually reduce its visiting time if I start with using my African Black soap...this time I was moving a lil slow with action. :(

Thanks for the info Shelley. When I get breakouts its always cystic acne and I find that treatment is not the same as treating normal acne. So frustrating.

Most definitely...the treatment used to get rid of blackheads/whiteheads can't be the same used for cystic. Cystic requires TLC treatment. It just gets super frustrating because it takes soooo long for cystic to go away.

Shea Moisture and there is another one Nubian something or the other. I can't remember the name of that one as I haven't had my cup of tea this morning and my brain is fuzzy.lol.

You are definitely right. They take SO long to heal. I'm dealing with some on week 3 now! They go away then a week later the cycle starts again Lol! My dermatologist said topical stuff wouldn't even help this type of acne much bc they are so deep. I do use benzoyl peroxide though (5%) and Retin A and it kind of helps. For some reason my skin will not respond to salicylic acid (I tried the Paula's choice) in any form. I'm hoping spironolactone helps as this is such a frustrating issue, especially when you're past the age when you should get acne. Oh and those third eye on the forehead ones are the worst Lol. Had my share of them over the years.

You might wanna try Renee Rouleau anti-cyst treatment. It definitely gets rid of those deep ones (not all but most) & they go away faster than if I would've just left them alone :) also I take half of a zinc tablet AM and PM till its gone.

@Sam...funny you mention Renee Rouleau as I love her entire range of products and I was thinking about re-ordering her full range for my skintype. Her line is so underrated.
