We've hashed this out dozens of times already. The general consensus seems to be that leggings are only appropriate as pants if they aren't too tight (no camel toe please) and are completely opaque in all circumstances.
Many people feel that it is more appropriate to have at least a longer top. Others opine that anyone can wear whatever they want. It's a matter of personal preference and level of comfort.

There are so many people arguing about this now. I think leggings are pants and they can be warn just like jeans is worn right. another question is about guys looking at you when you where leggings. there is a popular blog that was in the news by where I live talking about how this lady is going to stop wearing legging out because it is hard for guys to keep their eyes off of you. what do you think about that I think we should be able to wear what we want because it's comfy, we shouldn't be looked at like sex objects because we wear leggings. I don't know is it just me? what do you guys think?

Why not. As long as you feel comfortable. And of course no camel toe. There are leggings that are thick enough. Or if you want you can wear a jeggings.

I am much more conservative than most of the people on Beautylish, and I believe that modesty is best. In my opinion, leggings are not pants. At all. Ever. They are hosiery.
I think that if you dress provocatively, you are accepting that people are going to stare, and that people will judge you. That's life. Is it right to judge someone by how they dress? Not necessarily; but it is never going to stop. If you can't handle the negative attention, don't dress in a way that elicits that response. Pretty simple concept.

I think people should be able to wear whatever they want without being judged for no reason.

Emily I really feel like you're way off with that statement. Just because you dress "provocatively" doesn't give people the right to stare and judge. I feel like that's the main argument for girls being raped bc it sounds like "well she asked for it. Did you see what she was wearing?". Not cool.

I agree with Alexis. I don't believe leggings are provocative or people should stop dressing a certain way because it makes people stare. That is misogyny in its simplest form.

I wear leggings both ways, depending on my mood. I like going for a run in leggings and a tank top...does that make men stare? probably but that's not going to stop me from being comfortable. I don't think any woman should alter her wardrobe out of fear of being judged,or even worse, harassed.. so all in all, if you want to wear your leggings as pants then go for it. if not, that's okay too!

Shoot I wear leggings as pants. Its a difference between sheer tights and opaque leggings.

If you notice, I already said that it isn't necessarily ethical for people to judge others by their appearance alone. However, this is an evolutionary capability and survival instinct that is nearly impossible to remove because it occurs without conscious thought. It is part of being human, and everyone judges others at some point. That doesn't mean that it is okay to act on or express those judgements.
Part of life is accepting that not everyone is going to agree with your choices, whatever those may be. If you can't accept that you're going to get negative attention for wearing something revealing (even if you don't consider it particularly revealing or scandalous), then don't wear it. Either you deal with it and do what you want to do without worrying what others think, or you realize that you just aren't comfortable being seen in that light and you make a different choice. The same can be said for any style choice: tattoos, wild hair colors, piercings, extreme body mods, whatever.
What it comes down to is "you do you." If you are uncomfortable with people staring at you (regardless of the ethics of staring), Thebes don't give people a reason to stare. Otherwise, you're just making yourself uncomfortable, and what's the point in that?

I think they're fine as long as they aren't see through and your top covers your bum. I always wear mine to work because they are cheap and my lab coat goes down to my knees :P.

I think it looks so sloppy when people wear them with crop tops. I don't think it looks too flattering. I do like the look of them with an oversized sweater or hoodie. But I'm a girly girl and I love dressing up every day and leggings for me are quite casual so I never personally wear them.

I think as long as the leggings are ones that aren't see through, they're okay to wear without a longer shirt covering it, especially if you're going to the gym or something.

I honestly don't understand why people even have strong feelings against leggings tbh. Personally I make sure they aren't sheer at all and I swear a top that covers my bum and crotch. I'm kind of flabbergasted that anyone would find them provocative at all, they cover everything!

Alexis said it! I agree.
It is your body, do and wear whatever you're comfortable with. Just because you are not comfortable with what someone is wearing, does not give you the right to ridicule them, nor stare. I do make sure to buy thick leggings that are not see through. However, can we please talk about the fact that leggings are nearly the same as skinny jeans or jeans in general? They hug your body, the upper part of most jeans does that, right? Leggings lack buttons, and the material, but I've found legging that aren't see though are very similar to jeans. That's just a thought though. All in all I like my thick leggings and I do wear them as bottoms on occasion!

I think people can wear whatever they want...I wear leggings all the time but I make sure my butt is covered or my leggings are really thick...

I think as long as they aren't see through or too tight in the crotch wear whatever. But in my art class last year the girl who sat in front of me (facing me, it was 4 desks facing the middle so we could draw what was placed in the middle) I could see her crotch, and when she wore leggings, she'd wear too sheer ones and apparently no underwear lol. I could see everything. It was awful. I am all for wear what you want, screw everyone else, but if I can count how many pubic hairs you have just by glancing, you should cover up. I don't know how she didn't get arrested for indecent exposure, because you could see everything.
I wear leggings, but if they are tight in the crotch I will wear a long shirt or dress with them. I generally don't wear them as pants.
And isabel, jeans have enough fabric to not show every fold of your lady parts. Leggings just hug the folds. Jeans have a general shape that they follow, and unless they are too tight they follow that shape and not every fold and crevice of your body. Which is why jeans generally do not give the camel toe effect.
I do agree that you should be able to wear whatever you want. But people are going to stare if it's too tight or if it's unusual to them. People might comment. It's just how it is. It's not right, but you can't control other people. If you saw someone in a coffee shop dressed in all neon, with neon makeup and hair, you'd stare because it's not normal to you or that environment. It's shitty that some people don't accept everybody no matter how they are dressed or what their personal choices are, but it's how it is currently. Things are changing and more things are becoming accepted but there is still judgement everywhere.

I feel like your crotch and but should be covered. I can't go out in public otherwise.
