Why do you ladies use a primer before applying you foundation? What do you use and your opinion in the product?
I currently use the elf mineral primer but I really do not see a difference when using it or when I don't use it.

I currently use the smash box photo finish primer. I think this product is really great and it looks so natural on your skin. I would definitely recommend this.

I don't think it's necessary. When my skin is at its best, I never use primer. Sometimes, hardly though. I like using them because it makes the skin feel super smooths and helps foundation glide on, I especially like using it when I have stubborn dry patches. I like NYX photo loving primer, Lorac Mattifying porefection primer, and sometimes Smashbox photo finish (only when my skin is really bad because it's very silicone-y. I notice a difference when my skin is acting up, but when it's smooth already and being an angel lmao, I don't find its needed. My makeup usually stays on just as long without one

I've recently purchased the Australis original primer and personally I'm noticing a pretty big difference since I started using one, mine claims to prevent foundation fading, smooth out any imperfections with my skin and it's supposed to be moisturising. All of these things so far it has lived up to, I have this problem where my foundation cakes up under my eyes but since getting a primer I haven't had that problem anymore. :)

I agree with Renay that it's not very necessary. I only use it once in a while to seal up my pores and my skin gets very oily.

I use Mary Kay foundation primer. It makes my makeup go on extremely smooth, and it also last longer and doesn't settle into pores or fine lines.

It's definitely not necessary. in fact, a moisturizer can have the same effect as a primer. people use primers so their foundation has something to cling too, smoother more flawless face, and to help minimize the appearance of pores. if you apply a moisturizer, it will make your pores less noticeable with foundation on top and your foundation will still glide on smoothly. I definitely recommend doing this so save you cash!

Personally, I never use primer, unless I'm using a mineral foundation. I mostly just make sure I moisturise well before I apply my foundation and that seems to work for me!

I think it depends on your skin type. I've found that most people with dry to normal skin really don't need it, but I personally need to use primer or my makeup will melt off my face in 3 hours, because it is extremely oily. I started using the Rimmel Stay Matte and it's one of the only ones that have worked for me.

I have large pores so I use one. I notice a very big difference if I don't use it. I like the L'Or?al perfecting base.

That's what I was thinking. I always see beauty gurus on YT using a primer but I really don't feel the need to. I do have dry skin so I do moisturize before applying foundation.
What about a setting spray? is that essential to have?
Feb 9, 2015
Rissa G.
I don't setting sprays are necessary either. Haha. They make the skin look fresher if you've got the powder look, but that's it. I haven't noticed any difference in longevity. Setting sprays are okay for making shadows more vibrant too. If you want something to prolong the wear of your makeup, you would want a finishing spray (learned this from Jackie, I believe)

I personally think it's worth it. I have oily skin and a primer helps keep me matte for longer. It's also good for your skin because it creates a barrier between your skin and the makeup.

I have primers in my stash but I don't reach for them often. I found that if I stay on top my skincare program its one product I can leave out of the rotation. And when I do use it I only apply just in my t-zone (not all-over the face). And then it also depends on the foundation...I have a few that actually work better without primer.

I actually just use a mixture of a small drop of macs strobe cream with a drop of macs oil control lotion and its the perfect combination for my skin.

Shelley what foundations do you use?
Feb 9, 2015
Phylicia V.
Renay I agree. Because I just don't see a setting spray helps the foundation last longer.

Shauna I can understand why you use it due to oily skin.

I have the Kat Von D lock it foundation and this broke me up badly. I guess it too heavy for my skin. I had Becca too and it was broke me out so I'm thinking it's the thickness of the foundation That's breaking me out.

I use a primer for my pores.
so once I put it on my skin will look it's best without all my nasty pores peaking through.
I use the Loreal revitalift miracle blur & the smashbox foundation primer.
I personally think primers are worth it.
there are some primers for redness (a green primer) and they work wonders.

I have super duper oily skin so I use a foundation primer everyday. Of course it isn't necessary but I find that it helps suppress my oil and I just use an anti shine sephora one that's only about $15

@Phylicia...Laura Mercier Flawless Finish Fluid, Dior Star, Bobbi Brown foundation stick.

It makes a huge difference for me! After I apply foundation and all it makes it look smoother, not patchy, I don't get little dry flakes that I sometimes do, my skin doesn't get shiny and just makes it last pretty well overall :) if the primer you're using doesn't make a difference try to use a bit more product or try another primer :)
