So i have tried nail marbling twice..i have seen tutorials where some put a base color on the nails before the marbling and some just a clear base coat. Is there a right way? Is there a benefit to either?

A base color, I think, is really only necessary if the colors you are using to marble are turning out sheer when on your nails. Essentially, a base color will just make the marble stand out more and be more vivid.
