My hair is black and I'm looking to change my hair color. Maybe something lighter or maybe even purple? The thing is that I don't want to bleach my hair. What's the best hair dye for black hair so the color will show??

Nothing is going to show over black hair dye and to go lighter you must bleach it. There will be people on here thay will tell you that dying a purple over your hair will give you a purple tint in the sunlight but it's not going to work. I've done it multiple times and any good hairstylist will tell you it won't work. People on here will also tell you that there are box dyes that you can use to lighten your hair but you're going t have to use bleach. Be cautious though because black stains your hair and it'll take at least two bleach jobs and if your hair isn't healthy I wouldn't do it. This is all coming from personal experience.

They make dyes that dye over dark hair colors, black included. Check out garnier nutrisse and loreal hi color. They'll work for you with little damage, especially if you have virgin hair, if it doesn't show up as vibrant the first time, do it again and you'll be set to go. Although I hear most people don't have that problem with loreal hi color, garnier nutrisse isn't as vibrant as the box claims honestly, but a second time and you'll be happy for sure. But yea, you CAN dye over black hair with dyes that are specifically for darker hair colors. Look for "for darker hair colors only."

From my personal experience because I always have dark hair or always end up going back. I have dyed over my black hair with red and yes I personally had a red tint to it after so yes it worked for me. So it honeslty depends. Try it and see.

If your hair is naturally black then you can use a hair color specifically for dark hair which can lighten the color a few shades.
My hair is naturally quite black (course there are people that'll say 'there's no such thing as naturally black hair')
But mine was really really dark. People always thought I dyed it black when I had virgin hair then went to blonde anyway, my cousin has similar hair color, maybe a shade lighter but the hair color for dark hair worked a good amount.
It's not going to be super bright (you'd have to bleach it)
You could probably go from a level 1 to a level 4 medium brown maybe 5 light brown

If you were talking about dye then no
I'm an asian, and as far as the world know we have the darkest hair.
If you don't bleach or lightning your hair your dye will automatically turns into highlights.
The color itself requires some level of bleaching,
The weaker the color more bleachings are requires
For example if you have brown hair, red or brown color works. But pink is a no unless youre looking for highlight.
If you had blonde or white hair then lucky you. Any dyes will work.
