And Emily W., I'm really not trying to disrespect your opinion or to prove you wrong, I just think it's a matter of personal lifestyle and the choices we make for ourselves. Each to their own I guess 😊

I wasn't trying to disrespect you, and I apologize if it came off that way. I am a woman of science; I have a background in academics and I follow empirical evidence over all else. I put as much faith in government agencies as a hill of beans, that is true. But when I make a claim about something, I'm not saying such just because some government agency has deemed it safe; I have researched it thoroughly in scientific literature (that is, chemistry, food science, dermatology, and medical journals). I am also fortunate to have several personal contacts with backgrounds in cosmetic chemistry who can speak to these subjects as well.

There's a lot of fear about "chemicals" in the world today and a lot of misunderstanding about how chemistry functions in the world and in the products we use every day. I always encourage everyone to take, if possible, a basic organic chemistry course. It really opens your eyes to the way the world is connected around you. (For example, here are the "ingredients" of an organic banana:)

Haha I agree with you on the government thing. Yeah my entire family has gone into science with three of them being doctors and one of them a bioengineer, so I have a strong interest and pull into science as well. Which leads me to ask you if you could direct me to any sites that you found helpful in the cosmetology area, because I really am trying to cut down on all the harmful ingredients that go into my body. Btw the banana thing is really interesting:)

I'm with you viva in that I really don't trust the FDA either - mainly because they basically support any drug on the market that makes money (despite side effects including cancer and death) it's really all just support to make money - and they have supported numerous drug studies that actually killed a lot of people just to push drugs through the market to get them approved (hence the published side effects) and the medical industry in general imo is really just a bunch of people making money off the sick... and that is just not right... but I mainly wanted to present an article for emily to read here: http://centaur.reading.ac.uk/10465/
it was published in 2004 in the journal of applied toxicology and discusses high concentrations of parabens in breast tumors which suggests that are carcinogenic - but if you don't find this source reputable, then I understand - but I just wanted to present for your investigation/research - I personally have my masters in chemistry and I can tell you that organic chemistry (especially synthetic organic chemistry) courses are anything but easy! it's one of the toughest fields of chemistry but also one of the ground breaking in cancer and drug research - but I'm not trying to challenge anything just responding to your request for a reputable source about the parabens - hopefully it doesn't come off as negative =]

Thank you for that source Diana, I will check that out! I was hoping you would pop in with some journals and such, given your background in Chem. :)

Yeah girl it's really hard to find articles like this - honestly they are far and few between especially when it comes to skincare - but I'm glad I could help with that and I also commented on your profile with a more recent source if you wanna check that out too - it's really interesting actually :)

I believe "good" or "bad" refers to the outcome of testing. Some ingredients are considered "bad" because they have a higher rate of causing allergic reactions. Others, for instance, Parabens, have been found in cancer tissue, which makes them undesirable for some that don't like to take risks. A lot of these sites will break it down for you & explain exactly what each ingredient contains that they are considering toxic. Some ingredients are thought to be "safe" and do not pass US regulations. Others are clearly not safe but pass. If safety is a concern of yours, research it from several sources - read the facts & fiction and decide. A lot of people don't really care what the ingredients are as long as the product produces the desired effect. It's very individual. Other products may not perform as well, but are considered completely safe.

Also, chemical companies will give you completely different information than those that are 'natural.' Each have done their research, but have different criteria.
