Hi, I recently made a big mistake and tried lightening my already died black/brown hair with a medium golden brown box dye. Now, I had red roots and uneven hair color. It is black in some areas and an auburn in others- it looks terrible. I am not afraid of going back to dark hair, as I just want a quick fix. Would dying it darker make it look even again? And should I leave it on my roots a little longer to get rid of the "hot roots" effect I've created? Unfortunately, I can't afford a professional right now but I know that would be the best route to take.
Thank you!

If you're not afraid to go dark again then definitely use a darker color. It's a good idea to only add the color to your ends the last 5 minutes or so.
