I was just wondering what people's skincare routine was so I can get an idea for mine. I looked on the Internet and one site said to exfoliate both morning and night with a gentle exfoliater. Wouldn't that be quite harsh on the skin?

Only exfoliate once a week!
My morning routine is cleanse, tone & moisturise.
Night routine is cleanse, tone, serum, oil then moisturise.
I use a mask and exfoliater once a week.
I'm a beauty therapist so hope this helps :)

Exfoliating twice a day is harsh. That is far too much and will actually thin out your skin and cause you more grief than anything. I'm an aging beauty so exfoliating three times a week is a must for me since my cell turnover rate has slowed down considerably. For the past few months my routine has been this:
AM:
Cleanse with Philosophy Purity Gel
Tone Thayers Witch Hazel with Rose (alcohol free formula) Toner
Spritz face with Josie Maran Nirvana Hydrating Treatment Mist
Apply Joise Maran Pure Argan Oil Light
Moisture/SPF protection Josie Maran Daily Moisturizer SPF47
PM
Cleanse with same cleanser from AM
Tone with same from AM
Apply NUDE Skincare Milk (its an antioxidant serum)
Wait a few minutes and then I apply NUDE Skincare Rescue Oil
For eye cream I've gone back to using my grapeseed oil and I exfoliate using only topical products instead of manual. Once a month I might do a deep pore mask depending on how my skin is acting.

Mine is...
Am
Wash with aveeno cream cleanser (which has a very light exfoliant in it) and then moisturizer with aveeno clear complexion daily moisturizer and then I put on my eltamd tinted sunscreen over top
Pm
Wash my face with dove bar soap in the sensitive formula and then moisturize with the aveeno clear complexion daily moisturizer, or if my skin is super dry I will use Avene skin recovery cream

I thought it would be too harsh! Thank you ladies, you've been a huge help :)

Well I never exfoliate anymore because I have a Clarisonic, which has been the best thing for my skin honestly. Anyways exfoliating twice a day is WAY too harsh. Here is my routine for my extremely dry skin...
AM- Wash with CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser and then moisturize with CeraVe Moisturizing Cream mixed with Philosophy Back to Nurture Serum.
PM- Remove all of my makeup first. Apply Philosophy Clear Days Ahead soap to my Clarisonic and wash my face. Then I moisturize with the same CeraVe and Philosophy combo like I do in the mornings. And apply a spot treatment for blemishes if needed, but I rarely do that...

I personally do exfoliate everyday but I use an extremely gentle exfoliator by Modere
I cleanse my face twice a day with Modere's cleanser for combination skin. then I apply my Fresh Lotus Eye Gel twice a day. I moisturize with Josie Maran Argan Oil during the day (makes my skin lees oily). And I use The Body Shop's Aloe Vera Night Cream at night.

I've gotten my skin to where I don't feel that I need to cleanse in the morning, so there's that.
AM: Splash of water, tone with No7 Beautiful Skin Toner for normal/oily skin, Tarte Maracuja C Brightener Eye Treatment, No7 Beautiful Skin Moisturizer SPF 15 for normal/oily skin.
PM: remove makeup with Tarte Fresh Eye Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover Wipes (it's marketed as an eye makeup remover but the wipes are so big that I use it on my entire face), cleanse with Origins Checks & Balances Frothy Face Wash on my Clarisonic Mia 1, tone with the same toner and use the same eye cream, No7 Beautiful Skin Night Cream for normal/oily skin.
If I think my skin could use some extra help or I want to treat myself I use the Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask

For me personally I normally exfoliate once a day to every two days. Then I use a gentle cream cleanser and then coconut oil as my moisturizer/night cream. Once or twice a week I use a purifying mask. Normally once a week I don't do anything because take my makeup off, to give my face a break. I try to keep it simple and easy :)

No no exfoliating twice a day is too much! Even if you have super dry skin. I use to exfoliate every 2 days and use a peeling mask and these harsh chemicals in my face and my face was so bad. I turned to more natural products and ditched the peel off mask and started exfoliating 1-2 times a week. And now my face has never been better. When I was my face I use a natural soap bar that I got from an all natural store. I then tone and moisturize. That's what I do every day and every night. Of course the products change almost every couple of days so my skin can get benefit from different products.

Thank you ladies! I'm trying to get into a good routine as I've never really taken good care of my skin. I go days without washing it and then wonder why my skin looks dull and horrible! You've all given me great responses which are very helpful, so thank you!

Yeah as long as you clean and moisturize DAILY your skin will be better soon. Just give it time. Some people take months until results get in full effect so just be patient!

Thanks, I'll try to be! :)

I agree you don't need to exfoliate that often with an abrasive scrub but you can do with a chemical exfoliant (though twice a day still seems rough I would do once a day or every other day depending on your skin type) anyways here is my routine: I wash with the yes to tomatoes gel cleanser and for days that I don't use the abrasive scrub then I follow with the toner by Alba botanica acnedote line - then spot treat with either tea tree oil or the Clinique gel spot treatment (I rotate between the two every other day) then finish with a tea tree moisturizer by desert essence if I use the Clinique spot treatment or I use cetaphil moisturizing lotion if I use the tea tree spot treatment and follow with the neutrogena clear face SPF - for night time I use either the vitamin c microdermabrasion scrub by the body shop or the glycolic acid foaming cleanser by Mario badescu (this is my chemical exfoliant right now) and I use the vitamin c scrub like once a month - not very often because it is drying - then I follow with my alcohol free toner by neutrogena - and either just moisturize with jojoba oil or I use a vitamin c cream by garnier on my acne scars and follow with an ester-c cream by Jason - I try to rotate my products every other day or so - but that's my routine right now :)

I have never exfoliated ever. Age - 71. I have used the following routine for many years but now like this product better than the previous products I used to use. The only addition is the use of vit E oil.
Daily Routine Product: Monsia Skincare (since 2014)
AM
Apply daily facial cleanser gently rub into face and neck and very gently wipe off with a tissue.
Apply daily protection toner lotion to cotton wool and gently wipe face and neck
Apply Vit E oil to neck and around eyes (this is absorbed into the skin and is not greasy at all) and then I apply the intense moisturizing day cream gently around eyes and rest of face and neck
PM
Apply daily facial cleanser gently rub into face and neck and very gently wipe off with a tissue.
Apply daily protection toner lotion to cotton wool and gently wipe face and neck
Apply Vit E oil around eyes and neck (this is absorbed into the skin and is not greasy at all) I then apply the intense night repair cream liberally on face and neck
