My skin is very read and whenever I put on foundation or concealer it gets extremely cakey and dry almost powdery. What can I do to make it smoother and more natural?

Do you use a primer?

Well you need to make sure your skin is properly moisturized in the first place. Makeup will look better with skin that is properly taken care of. Do you moisturize? I suggest moisturizing every night with a thick cream moisturizer if you have dry skin, for oily you can use a gel. You should also moisturize before you put on your makeup everyday, or everyday in general with a light cream moisturizer (for both skin types as anything thicker will show on the skin and you don't want that). You should be exfoliating accordingly. Take your skin type into consideration and how much it can take. 2-3 times a week is ideal. Exfoliating takes away all the dead skin and dry patches on the face which makeup clings to. Also, a primer can be helpful as it leaves a smooth base for makeup to lay on. Also find one accordingly depending on your skintype. hope this helped a little.

It seems your skin is dehydrated. My skin was like that too because I couldn't find a skincare that was for my skin or that wouldn't break me out. I have combo oily and I always follow with a toner (Thayer's witch hazel) and a moisturizer (ole henrikson sheer moisturizer or 100% pure corrective coffee cherry cream for winter) I do exfoliate as well 2-3 times a week just as RT said, and I use Murad skin polish. I use a special treatment cream by Epionce called sport lytic tx and it's an exfoliating cream that I put on every night. I have dry patches around my nose area and forehead and these help exfoliate them but of course you have to use moisturizer every morning and night. One thing that also helps after you take care of the skin issues, is that after you are done putting your makeup on, you can spray with Mac fix plus spray to melt the powders into your skin so it looks natural.

I had the same problem, here's what's fixed it for me:
-Spray a fixing spray like Mac Fix + after your makeup is all done.
-Apply foundation with a beauty blender or fingers. Try to avoid brushes for foundation.
-Use a tinted moisturizer or BB/CC cream. If you can't part with foundation, look for a lightweight and dewy one, like Neutrogena Healthy Liquid Skin Makeup.
-Only set the most oily parts of your face with powder, like the T Zone, for example.
-Use CeraVe's products. They have a hydrating cleanser and a moisturizing cream/lotion. They both moisturize really well and are gentle on the skin, so the redness isn't as aggravated.
-Go sparingly on the concealer. Too much concealer will inevitably make your skin loo cakey, unfortunately. I have heard great things about Urban Decay's Naked Weightless concealer and NARS Creamy Radiant if you want a natural looking finish. Personally, I really like NYX HD concealer and Maybelline Fit Me concealer. In general, try to stick to liquid concealers! I've had some cakey experiences with stick ones, lol.
-Be sure to exfoliate with a chemical exfoliator (so as not to irritate the redness) around twice a week to get rid of dead skin that might cause caking.
I hope you achieve the natural finish you're looking for!

If you take a ton of moisturizer and rub it ALL into your skin before applying your foundation it goes on amazingly! Super smooth and not cakey at all!
