I recently bought some tea tree oil for my piercings (keloids) and I was wondering if tea tree oil is good for the scalp?? I've seen scalp treatments and shampoos with tea tree oil in it so what are the benefits from it to the hair and scalp??

I don't know the benefits for the hair but for the scalp it really helps reduce dandruff. My brother used it (he had terrible dandruff) and it really helped get rid of it! I used it to get rid of the excess oil on my scalp and also as a spot treatment. I've read that it also works as a lice treatment as well but I've never tried that one out.

It is great for flaking or itchy scalps, but terrible for your hair...especially if it is color treated. Think of it as a clarifying shampoo in that your hair will feel porous after use...and color will fade. Instead, I'd seek a tea tree SCALP treatment...if you have flaking and itching...focusing on the scalp rather than your hair. Sally sells one that is soothing in their "Generic Line".

I have color treated hair and use the scalp treatment once a month, avoiding putting product on my hair.
For my dry, flaking scalp... I use a weekly Green Tea rinse..steeping 2 teabags in a cup and letting cool. Then shampoo...rinse out...apply tea tree to my scalp using a nozzled bottle like you'd use to apply hair color. Massage in and wrap my head in a towel and let sit about 20 minutes. Rinse out and condition just my ends. Green tea is packed with anti inflammatory and antibacterial goodness so it helps me quite a bit. I've never experienced staining on my hair or saw my color affected, but you could always test patch. Good luck!
