It really depends on what you like to do! I like stretching my eye to the side while closing so I can see exactly what I am doing and have a flat surface.

That's how I feel but I think you should just play around a little with eyeshadow & find your own techniques. I'm no help with that advice lol but that's how I learn I spent hours on YouTube but figured my own way to do it. It might not be all that but sooner or later ill get better with the practice :)

I don't think there is a such thing as "too much blending" The more you blend, the more natural it looks! The only way you are blending too much is if your colors are fading away. Make sure you get good quality brushes and shadows and know that practice makes perfect :)

A brown mid tone shade in the crease to blend the shadows really helps the eyeshadow blend better.

Using a good pigmented shadow that can hold its own when your blending.

I don't think you are blending too much, you are probably not building up the color enough or using not pigmented eyeshadows. My advice would be getting a primer or trying wetting your eyeshadow brushes. Also don't be shy about packing that color, just keep and keep adding color more than you are used to. I think this might help you accomplishing the tutorials you watch :)
