So my father-in-law borrowed my DSLR a few months ago (he's a sculptor and is working on a bunch of new pieces) and he's needing it for another few weeks. Bad timing for me to jump on the instagram train, eh? Anyway, this is going to sound dumb, but the camera on my phone is for crap, and it makes me look better than I do lol. I know that should be a good thing, but I don't want to start out having these smooth, perfect pictures, and then get my camera back and feel like I need to blur my skin to make them look the same. Hope that makes sense. Anyway, the sharpen feature on my phone is a filter, so it doesn't work very well to take off the blur. Does anyone have any suggestions on a decent editing app? I don't need one with fancy filters or anything, just the basics. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Facetune is good it can blur your face pretty good and perfect365 the make up looks fake but you can choose foundation and it looks pretty good and sometimes the mascara works but not always.

If you just want something edit coloration, saturation, sharpness things like that then VSCO is a good one

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 4. The camera started out good, but it got scratched, so I can only use the forward facing camera :/

Pixl is fantastic and does so many things from basic edits and auto adjust to all sorts of fun stuff. My Samsung camera isn't that great. I feel ya. The app is free.

Ha! Ha! My phone sometimes does that...makes me look like I've blurred out imperfections and smoothed out my skin. Its kinda of a double-edged sword. You're like 'I look good". But then you feel like you're coming off like you're overly vain. I like CYMERA. I use it mainly for work, to lighten & sharpen reports before I send them. But they also have some awesome beauty tweaks too.

Btw, instagram has the ability to sharpen, brighten, contrast, adjust shadows, change warmth and saturation, etc. by simply clicking the wrench on the far right, just above your photo.

Marleen, that's exactly it! I love how it makes me look but it feels... inauthentic.
Thank you for the tips, Rozberry! I've only really noticed the filters on instagram. I'm technologically challenged haha.

VSCO is simple and easy, there's also a Photoshop app - does all the basics : sharpen, saturation, temp, fade, crop, etc.
