My face has gotten very narrow looking over the years and I would like to add some width to my cheek area and to the sides of my face so should I not contour those areas at all and just highlight them instead?

I would suggest a peachy shimmery blush and don't add it back to the ears, add it all over cheek area. I really love the body shop shimmer waves in the color coral

The coral color is so pretty but I just checked online and it looks like they've been discontinued 😟 I'll look for a dupe, thank you 🙂

They say blush should be applied on the apples of cheeks & sweep straight across in a horizontal line to the hairline to visually shorten a long face. Well- blended of course. Contour only top of hairline and lightly on chin.

A beautiful peach shimmer blush is Milani luminoso. Wayne Goss has a fantastic video on YouTube and probably here about how to apply blush for specific face shapes. It's helped me loads!

Marleen is right. To broaden the face sweep it horizontally instead of sweeping up toward the temples:)

Makeup, contouring especially is about illusion. Try using a bronzer or a darker powder on your chin and top of the forehead
