For homecoming would a just below the knee dress look weird or a mid shin? Because I'm not so sure about a super short dress...

Cute! Definitely check out ModCloth they have lots that length. But I only think tea length work best for people that are on the taller side... If you are worried about length you could always go with a high-low length or get a longer one and have it cut at a tailor to be shorter that way you could get it so it wasn't too short. I had a friend do that before for prom...
