With as dark as your hair is, you will have to bleach it some. Your best bet would be to go to Sally's, get the kalidecolors bleach packet for dark hair ( I believe the packet is brown) and a 20-30 volume developer. The reason for Kalidecolors is because it has a toner built in, so when you bleach, it eliminates the harsh, brassy colors you may get. Lightening kits from the drug store do not have these qualities, unless you can find one with a built in toner, but I have yet to find one. The problem with drug store hair colors is that they only work for up to 30 minutes and no longer lighten or deposit color after that. Also, using a blonde or homey color will not lighten your hair enough to reach the desire effect. The dye's available in the drugstore are for depositing color only, and the developer strength is (usually 10-20 vol.) with little to no lightening abilities.
Tips for application: take sections of hair, apply lightening mixture to section with gloved hands and wrap in foil. Check after 15 min and ever 5 after that.
Here is a video that demonstrates this perfectly

Hope this helped, let me know and post pics!!
