I have been dying my hair a dark red based brown for a year or so now, and I just want to take the red out of it. I decided the other day I want a dark chocolate brown with more golden undertones instead of the dark burgundy. So it's a subtle change, but I am clueless on how to do it right.

Red is very difficult to remove especially when if you've been using box dyes. I had been doing mine red for a really long time at home and it took more than 1 visit to a professional just because the box dye had really damaged my hair. Now you say you want a golden tone, but that usually is a red tint that you're going to get with a golden brown. I understand that you don't want that dark burgundy but you'll end up with a red tint with a golden. I recommend going to someone if you can just because getting rid of red is difficult.

It wasn't box dye if that makes any difference. Maybe I didn't mean golden. I want more of a yellow brown maybe? just dark brown, but with the red out of it. I wish I could upload a picture to explain better.

Then go for more of a ash color maybe?

I still feel like you'll end up with a reddish tint (not bad) the first time if you're doing it yourself. I just know thats always how its been for me. But I actually like a subtle red tint (like when your hair hits natural sunlight) I think it makes brown not so dull especially when it begins to fade.

Yes the ash looks like what I had in mind! I want to start getting the dyes and doing it myself to save a little money. I think I could deal with a more subtle red tinge, especially for a transition period.

I would go to Sally's and get some of there colors (they can help you with colors and explain how to mix them). Or John Frieda is a pretty good box dye. It has great coverage and doesn't damage my hair too bad.
