Makeup Hoarding... Time to purge...

I realized recently that my makeup hoarding had gotten out of control the past few years.

Today though I realized I'm finally at a place where I know what I like and what I use and I'm chalking the last few years up to research.

Anyway, I've decided it's time for a massive purge. Like as in epic level purging which my mom, sister, and niece are going to get the benefits of.

Knowing I'm doing this and doing a little research has made me feel much more comfortable with what I'm about to do.

Anyway, I was curious if the other beauty lovers out there have been through this and how you felt after? Any good tips?

xoxoxoxo, Kelly

So ladies, this will be a relaxing evening, complete with music, a cocktail, and a little time spent on my bedroom floor sorting through items.

I'm actually in the process of purging myself. Just sent a friend home with a bag of goodies and put one aside for another. I hoard lipstick and skincare more than anything and I'm right there with you. I know what works and an on a no buy because I just want to simplify my life and home. Love the positive attitude and I agree...turning this into something relaxing and positive makes a world of difference. It is nice to pass some love along. Mad props.

I'm not there yet lol. I have a hard time parting with things even when I know I won't use them. I need to be on the tv show hoarders tbh. Good for you!!

Yes I actually had this feeling of having too much makeup, because when I think about it. I don't need different palettes of many shades of eyeshadows when I can mix them. It's more of a want than a need. It kind of makes me a little silly to keep wanting the things that come out. I have never been this type of person and it's a lot stressful at times to feel dissatisfied of what I already have. Not a good feeling to have about myself, so after this train of thought I have put a complete stop to buying makeup. I gave away duplicates of palette to my friend and sister in laws, it felt amazing because what need do I have to have it dusted in my drawer. All I can say is, feel satisfied and thankful of what we have, and don't get drowned in the need to have the latest products. We can have the same outcome of our makeup with a little creativity. Love this thread so much , simplifying life is the most amazing feeling one can have.

Thanks Rozberry, I'm going through the same thing, just want to simplify everything. I'm sure I'll still have a large collection, but right now it's more then I could use in a lifetime.

Angela, I can understand that too, it took me a lot longer to get to the purge phase then it should have.

Livi, that's spot on, especially about being able to create colors rather then buying every color that comes out.

I think I'll post pics as I go along, I've decided to tackle it by category (individual shadows, samples, palettes, etc...) and for each category I'm going to pick a container and stick to only what can fit in the container. At least as much as possible, palettes will likely be the hardest.

Great idea. You've even managed to simplify your simplifying! I honestly don't have much in comparison to most..and now, most likely below average anount, but I can't resist a great red lip...lol

Kelly!! I was just thinking about you the other day - I miss seeing your hauls lol :)

I would love to see what products do / don't make the cut!

I've been doing this for a month or so getting rid of lots of makeup and skincare that I don't use. I give it to my sister, mother and friends. I felt very overwhelmed with the anount I had (probably not as much as others but definitely more than what my friends and family have). I feel more relaxed now and not anxious about having so much stuff that will expire and go unused. My weakness is definitely foundations and blush. At the moment I have 10 or so foundations and 20 something blush, which is still a lot but I'm getting there. Doing an inventory is great. It puts things in perspective. Good luck with it and I would love to see pictures too :-)

Hey Grace, hope you are well! I've been traveling tons for work, so haven't been shopping much.

Rebecca, just went through blushes and that was harder than I thought it would be.

I'll start posting pics, but I'm no where near done.

To start, here are the samples I had.

Next was cream eye-shadow/paint pots. Kept only the six at the bottom of the pic (5 MAC paint pots and 1 MUFE aqua cream).

Kept all my MAC pigments. Just couldn't part with these.

I've been thinking of doing the same thing. I did a small purge a few months ago of nail colors and then it moved over into my makeup collection where I purged items that I haven't touched in years and I think I could still take out far more. I kicked out MAC lippies that I could no longer handle (uber dry lip situation). I just have a hard time letting go of eyeshadow. I've posted pics of my collection here on BL but it wasn't a true representation because I have a closet full of makeup in my master bath and I had a neighbor come over and she gave me such grief over it that I honestly felt embarrassed/ashamed. Now I'm going thru a life transition and quite frankly I need to lighten up my load. I think this time around I'm going to do a spreadsheet because I want to reduce the level of dupes I know I have. Keep us updated on your purge Kelly.

Shelley, I'm with you, I'm going through a transition too, work is insane, I lost my father to cancer, and I'm having health issues. I'm trying to make my life lighter. I realized that while this is all fun, most of it ends up being clutter for me. I'm in no way ashamed, I just want to keep the things that really tickle me, it'll still be an embarrassing amount.

I am however dreading touching my large palette collection, I'm attached to those.  :(
