This might be a stupid question but would powder foundation work for oily skin? I have minimal acne, so I'm not worried about that. I just like to even my skin tone. But would a powder gove me a cake face? What with touch ups on the tzone and such? Thanks so much in advance!

I feel like powder foundation looks a bit cakey on oily skin..I have pretty normal skin that's mildy oily and I use MAC Studio Fix powder foundation and it works well for me. The shine peaks through after about 6 hours to which I just blot. Like I said, I don't have that oily of skin and I try to apply as little powder as possible which I can get away with with the MAC one since the coverage is pretty nice.

If your skin is really oily though, I'd steer clear of powder foundation. It separates on the skin from what I noticed.

I have very oily skin and I tried out the Clarins powder foundation (I forget the exact name) but I ended up returning it. It separated like RT said and it looked like I hadn't even put any makeup on half way through the day. It was awful. I agree on staying away from powder foundations unless you find one that works for you.

Thanks so much R T and Brittany. That's what I thought but then one of my friends started confusing me xD I guess I'll stick to my matte liquids.

I recently picked up the kvd lock it powder foundation & have been loving it. My only other intro to powder foundations was w/ my Laura Mercier which paled in comparison to kvd. The latter has awesome coverage (I have post acne hyperpigmentation) comparable to my other liquid foundations (buildable to full coverage) No oxidation or separation, but I do apply a mattifying primer & follow up w/ an UD setting spray. I would check out sephora, have a sales assoc match & apply & then wear it around for a few hours while you shop so you can see 1st hand how it handles on your skin.

It kinda just come down to preference. People assume everyone with oily skin wants a matte look so they go straight to powders. I liked to play around and get different finishes and looks and didn't like to restrict myself.
I loved how powder foundations looked. At first it's a powder foundation but once your oils come through it gives a more natural, not so powdery look and wears great through out the day.
At one time I did notice it looking cakey and such but that's because I was using too much (sponge) and I'd touch up with more powder foundation.
I started playing around and using a dense kabuki brush to apply it (still get the coverage I like without packing it on so heavily)
And I actually would blot my face with blotting sheets and then apply a blotting powder which doesn't have so much pigment and is meant to just mattify any shininess.
I do like powder foundations because they're quite quick and blend easily. They also don't really look so.. Made up compared to creams and liquids but they do usually need a concealer underneath.
I really like MACs Studio Fix Fluid and the Matte Bare minerals loose formula

Thanks so much for the suggestions Bailey and Amanda. And Aurora I'll definitely have to check out the kvd one. And I get what you mean about not wanting to just be matte. I like a little bit of a glow or dewy look, its just much harder to achieve without lookying oily or cakey for me, as I'm still learning.

Just like any other foundation application and content make a huge difference. the more natural less stuff in a mineral powder foundation, the less caky it will be. I have used all types of foundation over the years with my very oily skin. mineral makeup works great if it does not have certain ingredients. the small individual companies that handmake their products work best. look at suncat and meow cosmetics. they also have primers for oily skin too.
