I've brought a tub of coconut oil and have no idea how to use it for my hair, which is quite long, mid back sort of length, how much should I use? What is the best way to get it out of the tub?

First be sure it is the right kind of oil..unrefind, extra virgin organic and cold pressed. Refining removes the necessary benefits and changes the oil. If it is solid, scoop some out and either warm it by surrounding it with hot water for a little or place in outside in the heat until it is pliable...a thick, creamy texture with some melted down to liquid. Microwaving it will just ruin the point of cold pressing it..so you want to make it easy to work with by using lower temps to liquify. I personally apply mine to dry hair...skipping my roots...although it IS good for your scalp. I just fins it best to skip mine. I work it in from the hair shafts down to the ends. Sometimes, I pin it up or wear a towel for a few hours, but I've also slept in it with a showercap. I wash my hair twice with a sulfate free shampoo to rinse it out. Some people prefer to apply it to damp hair...which I've also done and is actually much easier to do, but I just think dry is the most effective for my type of hair.. I know those who use it after a shampoo and rinse it out, sans conditioner and so it's really about finding what works best for you.
Here is a step by step pictorial with instructions.

I just scoop a little with a spoon and it'll melt with the heat from your fingers and just apply it to your hair

Livi is correct, you can use your fingers to warm it, but in my frigid air conditioning or dead of Chicago winter, for the amount I use..that's just not an option for my hair. It is, however, how I use it for removing eye makeup.

(The shampoo rinses the tub. I just make to move the lather around with my feet before getting out.)
