My favourite way to contour is using a darker foundation (I like loreal true match) and then use a bronzer/contour/darker powder (nyc summer bronzer, too faced chocolate soleil, any darker face powder. Another way you can contour is by taking one of those three products and a small brush and just go back and forth on your cheek bone. A tip would be start with a little product and build up. And use a business card to create a prefect line. Good luck xx

Here's a pretty good guide one where to highlight and contour.
But are you wanting to do a lot of defining or are you aiming for a more natural look? For a natural look, I would say to use a bronzer powder and use that on the hollows of your cheeks, temples, jawline, and down the sides of your neck so that your face matches your neck. The bronzer I'm currently using is the nyc smooth skin bronzing powder, which works great!

Highlight with a shade 1-2 shades lighter than your foundation and a contour that is 1-2 shades darker than your foundation.

Contour should be done with a cool toned grayish-brown shade, not anything warm, or a foundation/concealer than it one to two shades darker than your regular skin tone foundation/concealer.
Contouring creates shadows so you're receding where you put the contour so you can pick and choose what you do and don't want to contour.
Contour under your cheekbones to make them more prominent.
Contour the sides of your nose to make it look slimmer and taller.
Contour under the chin and jawline to sharpen the jawline.
Contour the forehead/temples to make it appear smaller.

I agree with Alexis! As for products Kevyn Aucoin Sculpting Powder is probably your best bet. I just find most contour kits are all just bronzers which is completely wrong for contour. The sculpting powder is more cool grey toned which will create shadows vs brown orangey lines.

Try City Effects contour kit 2. Great for beginners, recommended by Alma (moderater) and its just amazing. also less than $15. there's directions in the kit.

Also, city effects 2 is an amazing Kevyn Aucoin dupe. Less pricey, so when you get the hang of it, you can buy that one of you like it.

Mac blush in taupe is a great option if you're a fair skin tone.
