I like to be cute and comfy so I would wear jeans, (maybe) rain boots, a cute top, and a cute rain coat to match. Or regular coat!

For a long ride, tight jeans are VERY uncomfortable. I typically do some yoga pants with a Tshirt and zip up jacket to adjust in the car. I also keep a extra pair of pants in the car just in case I would want to change.

Whatever is comfortable to you. As for rain, always have a jacket laying around, I don't think you would want to wear it through the whole ride.

When we go to ny or Canada I usually wear a tee shirt yoga pants and flip flops but like you said it's cold wear yoga pants a sweat shirt and boots and just take them off in the car so your more comfy and take a blanket in the car I usually do :-)

Last time I was on a long drive (about 18 hours straight by myself), I wore boots, leggings with a cropped graphic tshirt under my favorite oversized flannel shirt, and a large knitted infinity scarf (as a drapey hood instead of a scarf) to keep me warm. I loved driving in this outfit! I liked having my hair down and since I kept sunglasses on most of the time the only makeup I put on was bright lipstick!
It kept me warm at gas stations and driving with the windows down in tempertures below freezing but it wasn't stuffy and hot when I went inside anywhere (or when I arrived at my warm destination). And I wouldn't be embarrassed to be seen in public in these clothes-comfy does not have to mean sloppy =)

I'm all about comfort...sweats and wool socks. I don't even bother with looking cute for a long car ride. I drove 2,500 miles from CA to FL in winter (chilly and rainy) and the cute factor lasted the first 8 hours. After that I was dying for comfy clothes.
