& what kind of curls does each produce? Which do you prefer? I have long, thick hair btw so I was wondering which I should use.

A curling iron has a clamp, a wand doesn't. I think that curling irons produce tight, uniform curls and curling wands produce more loose, natural, and bouncy curls. I have long and thick hair too, and I prefer curling wands.

Curling irons are wide so they make loose curls and curling wands are thin so you get tighter, bouncy curls. I personally prefer the curling wand 'cause curls last longer and once you brush/comb them out, they look super smooth and natural. If you need a good curling wand check out the karmin g3 clipless :)

I feel like if you weren't to use the clamp on the curling iron (like I have heard not to) that it would be the same thing as the wand. Am I wrong on this? Mel S. mentioned the iron being wider, but I can't see the wand being less than 1/2in and I've seen irons that small.

I use a smaller curling iron but don't use the clamp. In fact, a couple of my curling irons I have just taken the clamp off.

And all you do with the wand is wrap your hair around it. you don't have to worry about kinks or anything. and you can get any size in it, all the same as if it was a curling iron.
