So here's the thing, time and time again I try applying eye makeup hoping to achieve that beautiful gradient look. How ever every time it seems as if the makeup won't adhere to my face! I've tried numerous primers yet nothing works. I don't know if I'm not using enough primer or to much, or if my brushes are just bad ( I admit most are from rite aid ), or if I'm just using make makeup. I've tried knock off brands and name brands like "Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo Eyeshadow" and things from Sephora. Can someone please help and tell me what I'm doing wrong? :c.

Sometimes photojournalism because of a oily lid. Blot off any oil then use a primer, I like the 1$ one from elf. Then apply makeup. If it's still not working then let me know And maybe I can find more ways to make makeup stay longer.

Urban decay is really pricey but their primer is AMAZING! I highly recommend you try it.. And brushes can be a huge part too if not used right...

Omg yes. Elf is amazing, I love everything I have tried from them. I love their studio line brushes the best.

Hey Danny...I read somewhere that Elf products and Urban Decay products are manufactured by the same company...which makes sense since both there primers are the same mixture and elf puts out eyeshadow books that have the same shadows as urban decay shadows...elf is a great brand for someone who has a tight wallet...Now if you have an oily lid (which I do) I use MACs paint pots as a shadow base...it has a consistency of a stiff concealor so the shadows stick better for me and stay put all day :-)

Hi Danny,

It is VERY easy to use too much eye primer. Often times if you are using too much, your shadows will "ball" or go on too heavy. Brushes, like the above members mentioned, also play a huge role in application. I personally love the Billy B brushes as well as Hourglass brushes. They can be a bit pricey but it's an investment. If you wash them regularly and take good care of them, they should last you years. Here is an amazing article written by James Vincent that goes over how to build your brush kit and which brushes to use for what:

Hope that helps! :)

Thanks everyone, I really have a lot to learn. Been reading up on brushes and it's been a bit over whelming but all your tips are sure to be a big help. And I most definitely will be investing in better brushes!

Crown brushes are used by a lot of makeup artist, I have them too. Also you can buy these eyeshadows from eBay, 120 eyeshadow palette, usually cost around £10
Also another trick, apply what colour you need on your hand, build it and use a makeup wipe to wet it and use. Also loose pigments from mac are very vibrant too

Thanks Jacqueline for doing the research on Elf & Urban Decay companies, guess that article I read about that was wrong. But I have that e.l.f. book and its darn near close in color and quality to the Urban Decay Naked palette...but everyone has their opinions :-)
