I have been waiting for some time now to dye my hair a bright, "Ariel" red. I did my research, did everything I was "supposed" to do to achieve the color, but for some reason it only took to the hair I had highlighted MONTHS ago. My highlights were also covered up (I hated them so I slapped some black hair dye all over my head). I really want this color, and I look like a mess, so can anyone tell me what to do?! Please & Thank you!

I second the motion. What do you mean what you were "supposed to do"?

I get the impression that you hated your highlights, dyed your hair black, then decided you wanted red and put the red on top of the black but it only took to the parts you had highlighted.

I had a professional do my highlights, they came out nice and not splotchy or anything of the sort. I got really sick of the color because I'm so used to having black hair, so I covered them up. This was around 3 months ago though. I went back to the same salon wanting to do the red, but the stylist gave me directions for a "DIY" dye because it would have cost me quite a bit to have her do it. My dye had faded so much that I didn't need to lighten it if I bought the dye (Hii Color Highlights for DARK hair). It took really well to some parts of my hair but others just show no difference. It really doesn't look awful, it's just not what I wanted.

Well thanks! I did end up running to another salon for a second opinion by a colorist. She told me that my best bet was to come and get it done, but that since I now have some lift in my hair and a little color it might just work. I'm giving it one more go simply because it really didn't damage my hair at all.

Color does not lift color. High-lift is NOT going to work on your hair.

You need to remove the black - it doesn't matter if it's faded. You still have to remove it. Then you have to lighten the remaining pigment that's left in your hair. THEN you can dye it red.
