Primers vs. Base

From my understanding primers prep the eye lid with a smooth surface for shadows,prevents natural oils from breaking it down and Intensify colors and help blend well.Base may do the same but does not prevent creasing so that being said I've realized I like to use both Primer first then Base then shadow.What are your thoughts? What do you prefer? Can you see the difference?
