The obsession with expensive brands.

As a professional makeup artist I love all types of makeup. But most of my clients if not all appreciate me using the higher end brands So in my kit I have a lot of different brands of that sort. But I do have some drugstore stuff in there be ause honestly they work great also. The NYx pigments are like 2.99. I cannot get the Mac pigments fir that even with my discount!! But personally I spend tons of time in ulta and target as well as sephora and MAC. HAHA.

My collection is 99% drugstore. I have the Naked palette that was given to me as a gift. I do enjoy the Naked palette and I use it a lot, but I reach for my Drugstore brands just as much. I do love the packaging on some of the prestige brands and I've seen some stuff I would love to have, but I can't justify the expense to myself, lol!

I do think MUA's should have a good mix. As a consumer, if I'm shelling out dollars to have someone else do my makeup, I better see some stuff I don't have in my own makeup drawer or I'm going to be pretty disappointed. People go see an MUA for an event or special occasions and they want to look and feel glamorous. No, you don't have to have prestige brands to achieve that, but I feel like its part of the experience.

I really don't like drug store. The only brand I like is Revlon because their foundation and lipsticks feel high-end, and sometimes Maybelline's mascaras. I feel like if I'm putting makeup on my face, it should be the best, especially with my sensitive skin. I don't like the eyeshadows, bronzers, or blushes at the drugstore, so that's why I splurge on high-end producs.

@Jacqueline I always like how you could just say the right things.

Oh yeah, I agree that a bad product is a bad product, what I meant was I'd rather see a decent cheap eyeshadow applied nicely than one that may be better, but is applied badly.
I'm not against high end makeup at all. I just think some products are hyped up way too much.
I bought a Dior eyeshadow today. I bought it because I tried the tester and it was THE shimmeriest, most beautiful eyeshadow I've seen in all my days. So yeah, sometimes it pays off, but I think sometimes its also unnecessary.
As you said, it's best to use what you think is best for the job x

I agree, yes there are crappy cheap eyeshadows. There are also crappy expensive ones. It comes down to talent I think.

I love my high end stuff. I do feel like I get more for my money. I just have never had much luck with drugstore makeup. I have acne prone skin so nothing as far as foundation or concealer from the drugstore has ever worked for me. I probably wouldn't be so into high end eyeshadow if I hadn't come across Urban Decay. I love their formula and their colors and I haven't really seen any shades at the drugstore that compare to the ones I have from them. Then again I probably haven't been looking because I have more than enough eyeshadow from the palettes I have from UD now. But I am always happy with my investment. I still have the first palette I bought from UD and its held up wonderfully and I still have yet to hit pan on a single color in the palette after many years of use. For me its worth the extra money. But of course a bad product is a bad product regardless. But the return policies are usually really good, especially at Sephora, so I feel that if I would get a bad product I'd be able to get back on track and find a good one. For me its worth it, but there are people who can use the cheapest stuff and still make it look fabulous. I myself prefer high end products for a lot of things. Although I swear by Covergirl Lash Blast. I have used that since it came out and pretty much nothing else. I don't even look at high end mascara.

I use primarily high end. I'm not snobby about it; it's simply a luxury I indulge myself in as I can afford it (no kids, good paying career). I certainly wouldn't be buying expensive face creams and makeup if I couldn't pay my bills! And I love a good bargain as much as the next girl, so I do have some drugstore scores in my stash. But for my personal tastes and complexion, I've achieved better results over the years with higher end.

I agree too, I have a few expensive pallets but most of my makeup is inexpensive && works just as good as the other stuff (: it's all about the make of the product that makes it what it is. I love NYX && Wet N Wild and I find those are pretty good products for cheap (:

I did actually make a high end purchase today... This Dior eyeshadow. It was in the clearance with £10 off. Got it for £11.50 but that's still a lot compared to what I normally pay. But I bought it because its the shimmeriest, most amazing eyeshadow I've probably ever seen. It was worth the money. But I wouldn't have paid that much for let's say a matte brown eyeshadow or whatever, because I can get a decent one of those for a pound that works fine.

My ethics play a big role in the products I choose to purchase, and they're a very few vegan options at the drug store.

Basically it boils down to this...if you can afford high-end then great for you. If you can afford drug-store then great for you as well. We need not pass judgment on those who favor one price point over another. Jacqueline hit it right on the nose about what her clients expect of her and as a consumer of MUA's I too require to see stuff in their kits that I don't even have.

@Tiffany M I completely won at life today... I got that, it was 3 for 2 on revlon AND I got 4 pairs of shoes for £13!

Like I stated before I feel that professionals need to have a well rounded artist kit to suit customer need. Personally for ones own needs you buy what you want with your money. If there's a high end products that I want I buy it just the same as I buy drugstore brands if I want it. All women deserve to pamper themselves.

Well lucky you have good cheap products... Because in my country (Switzerland) the only "good" products are really expensive and believe me, I've tried the cheapest and its not like your wet and wild thing...

I agree with all of what you said, but I'm from the Caribbean and you don't really get the expensive products. and the drug store makeup aren't worth it. they make your skin bad. so if I had a choice I'd buy the expensive ones.

Harriet M.

I love both, but as a makeup artist you can't charge a lot of money to clients and use wet and wild brand. from a business stand point if I charge someone $50+ for makeup I know they are going to want to see some name brand stuff. personally I use Wet and wild lipsticks, revlon foundation, and my eyeliners and eyeshadows are usually higher end. And I DO NOT buy into the hype that is MAC.

@Harriet M I agree. If I was going to pay someone to do my makeup I wouldn't want to just see them with a kit full of drugstore stuff at all, but it would also be nice to see a few drugstore products because it is nice to see things that are affordable that a MUA would obviously recommend and gets good results from :)
