It took me forever to get the liquid liner thing. At first I would use pencil and then go over with liquid liner. I eventually stopped using pencil first. And 2 years later- sometimes I get a great winged look and sometimes it looks like crap =\. Buy like Courtney said, start off in the inner corner and make little marks as you go. You don't have to do it all in one swipe ;-(

Kelsie, I would recommend you don't use the ones that look like that at the tip. They are harder to work with and usually make a mess. I use liquid liner all the time. Place your elbows on a table or a flat steady surface then while doing the line steady your hand on your cheek so it won't shake while applying! :)

Jordana's fabuliner makes doing a winged liner super easy. I've used a lot of different liquid liners and this is the easiest to maneuver in my opinion.
