Blonde Hair To Brown...?

I currently have bleach blonde hair that is highlighted through a cap. I am looking to go a bit of a darker colour but still have small streaks of blonde through? Would it be best to highlight my parting with the blonde.. Then put the cap on again and do the darker colour? Advice please? :)
