Definitely depends on your budget and the style you're looking for! There are tons of great short, semi formal dresses at Forever 21, H&M and the like. I saved wearing a gown for my senior year. I'd actually recommend renting online @ renttherunway.com cause you have tons of cute designer choices! And if you don't plan on rewearing or keeping it around, why buy it right? The only downside is that you don't get to try them on, but they also let you rent two sizes and they have pretty useful reviews! High end thrift shops and department stores. I won "best dressed" in high school and always got tons of complements wearing designer cocktail dresses or vintage gowns to proms and school events-everyone else always looked really similar and even had a lot of the same dresses from prom-y stores!
