I've heard that if you wash your hair everyday it damages it greatly over time, causing it sometimes to fall out as you age. Some say you should wash your hair only once or twice a week with the aid of dry shampoo. Is this true or just a myth? Anyone have any ideas on that perfect balancing point? I'm looking forward to your thoughts because I'm not sure what to think!

It's not washing your hair that damages it, it's what you use to wash it. Many shampoos have very harsh detergents that are practically the same as dish soap. Try gentler, lower sulfate or sulfate free shampoos.

washing hair daily strips the natural oils your hair creates which is good to have. I wouldn't say it severely damages it or makes it fall out. if you can't go without the clean feel I would go with a dry shampoo or what Brianna suggested. Personally I wash my hair every other day or every two days and it suits me well.

I wash my hair every 2-3 days, any more and it's gets greasy, but I have long and really thick hair, so I think it depends on you're hair type:)

I can't say how bad it is for your hair because I don't really know much about hair but I do know that washing your hair with hot water all the time isn't the best for it. I only wash my hair every other day (sometimes I go two days without washing) and I have definitely noticed a difference from before, it is way softer. I also try to wash it with cold/cool water half the time. If you decide to start not washing it every day it will feel greasy at first, but after a couple of weeks your hair will get use to it and be fine, and just gradually move up on the spacing if you wish. I know some girls that only wash once a week and you can't even tell.

If you have straight hair you may have to wash it everyday to keep it from looking greasy, but if you have curlier hair you only have to wash it every 2 days or so! If you are African American you only have to wash it once a week! Also you should use a gentler shampoo if you do wash it everyday.

Well I try to wash it every other day with a sulfate free shampoo mainly because if I leave it without washing for longer than two days it gives me some acne. I know it seems like it hair cant really cause acne but when your hair is very oily and keeps getting in to your face it can make you breakout... However, I do know the natural oils that hair produces helps your hair stay healthy. So if your hair is dry and you dont suffer from acne I say wash it every three days.

I have straight hair and I don't have a problem with going days without washing it. I know you said "may" and it depends on the individuals hair, just stating for others with straight hair that are curious.

2 (or 3) times a week is ideal, washing your hair daily isn't healthy for your hair it damages it!!! too much is never good, shampoo can take care of your hair but it is also bad when used too often. when washing daily your hair gets greasy waaaay faster so try to build it down: try to wash your hair every 2 days for 2 weeks. then you try towash it 3 times a week and if it does not get geasy try 2 times a week! but 3 is also healthy for your hair! if it DOES get greasy in the first 3 weeks use dry-shampoo so you can wait one more day with washing!
hope this helps xoxo

Honestly, I think this depends on the person, I shower everyday and sometimes twice a day and washing my hair is a priority, I just can't imagine having a stinky head, no offense, my hair is nice and shiny, no damage, if anything maybe my ends because I curl it, I suggest you just test it out, see what works for you

I wash my hair at minimum every other day. Sometimes every other 2 days. I noticed a big difference in how soft and healthy my hair felt and looked. Your hair needs the natural oils, that is why your body produces it. I have extremely oily hair, so dry shampoo is essential.

I CAN'T wash my hair more than every 2-3 days or it gets dry like straw and frizzy, but my sister HAS to wash her hair every day. She's tried every method to cut back and none of them have worked. So I think it truly depends on your hair and your body. Also brushing your hair a few times a day helps evenly spread the oils and protect the ends, so you might be surprised and find out you can do every other day or every 3 days (2 days between washings.) I know some people who can go longer, and they keep their hair clean for 4-5 days by simply rinsing well in the shower. shampoo doesn't kill germs, it only helps wash out excess oils and any little particle that may have gotten in there, so it's not "dirty" to not wash you hair every night if your hair isn't oily or you didn't sweat a lot that day.

Try to wash it every few days because washing it everyday causes your hair's natural oils to dry out. The oils on your scalp help protect your hair.
