I've been obsessed with wanting to do a gradient nail design, so I bought the make up sponges and proceeded to apply the polish like a lot of YouTubes demonstrate , but the polish barely stays on or builds up. I'm using sinful colors nail polishes.
Is this a matter of nail polish quality? Or do I just need to build more coats up? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Hey there!
I found I had the same problem you're having. I went out and got different sponges and it made a world of difference! The ones you want are more porous than the typical makeup sponge. They have a lot more holes and have a rougher texture.
I'm not home righ now but I'm pretty sure I found mine at a drugstore (I'm in Canada, it was Shoppers Drug Mart) and they're in the shape of arrows. I think they're made by a brand called Q.
Hopefully that helps!

it depends if ur polish is more transparent or bold but this happens to me sumtimes and i just pile on a couple coats depending on the color. also use a white polish as a base coat so that ur colors will show and u wont need so many coats. hope this helped (:

Are you applying a white or base polish on your nail before sponging? This was my problem and now my gradient is much more vibrant(:

Try doing 2 or more coats. Just be careful not to mix the colors on the second try. I use Sally Hansen.
