hi im african american and my hair just never grows its to my shoulders and i really want it to grow long. i do get a relaxer every month. Do putting in weaves for a long time make your hair grow? my moms hair was really short like to her neck and she started wearong.a.sew.in weave for a couple of months and its past her shoulders now, is it because its.protected from the heat? do clip in extensions have the same effect on protecting hair like sew in weaves do? btw im 13

Sew-ins are a form of protective styling & if done right, they do grow your hair. As for your own hair, do you have a regimen for it? Keeping your ends trimmed, wrapping it at night w/ a scarf, using a good moisture rich shampoo, and deep condition once a week, are all goods ways to grow your hair. Also, finding a good daily moisturizer /hair cream is necessary. Most importantly, stay away from direct heat as much as you can. When you need to dry your hair set it on rollers or wrap it around your head & sit under the dryer. I could go on & on (as I already have, LOL) but that is a start ;-) Hope it helps!

I think you might be using relaxers too frequently. You should try to space them out every 6-8 weeks to reduce chemical damage.

Plus why Ashley has suggested above! Also try to use protein conditioners to reduce breakage, but be sure to follow it up with a good moisturizing deep conditioner.

is mane and tail shampoo and conditioner good for my type of hair

Mane and tail is very protein heavy so it might make your hair feel hard if you don't moisturize it enough. I like to use elasta QP sulfate free shampoo, aphogee 2 minute protein conditioner, then organic root stimulator replenishing deep conditioner. I moisturize my hair daily with doo gro mega thick oil and aphogee provitamin leave in spray

Your hair will never grow if u continue to relax your hair every month. I relax my hair every 3 months and I wash my hair every week with a moisturizing conditioner. Also, the mane and tail protein conditioner has been a staple of mine since forever but the trick is to use it only once month. Using it too much will make your hair break off tremendously.

My favorite moisturizing conditioners are sitrinillah deep con. by hairveda, silk elements megasilk (u can find this at Sally beauty supply), and neutrogena triple moisture deep conditioner mask (cvs, target, Walgreens)

Hey VMC S. I used to have hair to my bra strap. Its 4 inches above now because I cut it. I am growing it back now. The key to getting long hair is not relaxing so often, avoiding direct heat and keeping your hair from becoming dry. I relax my hair every 16 weeks. (strange huh?) let me explain. after about 6 weeks the new growth is obvious and frizzy right? Not if you cowash your hair and treat it right. Cowashing is washing your hair with conditioner only. I cowash atleast 3 times a week, sometimes more. This softens my curls so I can put on a headband or do a few twists or bantu knots at night, take it out and wear my hair curly. What if I want my roots straight? After you wash if you roller set your hair the right way and sit under a dryer those roots will be straight, then comb your curls out and wrap your hair. Easy. It takes some work, but don't be lazy if you want that long hair sweetheart.
P.S. Extensions work too. I have made you-part wigs and sewn the perimeter to my a foundation braid (a circular braid around my head) put 4 big braids in between and removed the wig weekly for a cowash and washed with shampoo once a month. (SEEN IN my profile picture and a few other pictures) keeps my hair nice and thick and undamaged. This to me is the lazy way. Remember your hair grows 1/2-1inch a month. Good luck. Hope this helped
