If you need volume, there are sprays just for that....bump you hair on base, pin each finished curl then where you want volume you can use "freeze spray" or "volumizing" spray on the stem of the curl then un-pin, loosen the curls by combing lightly with your fingers or a wide tooth comb and boom volume without teasing which causes tangling...let me know how it turns out hunny
