The Only 2 Hair Products You Need for Volume-Packed Blow Outs

Gravity-defying volume is real and attainable for any hair type, but does it last? My sister (fine-medium, wavy, long hair) and I (medium-thick, curly, long hair) have scoured shelves and tested a range of strand-swelling products to answer this age old question. Now, we can say that with the right line up, voluminous blow-outs can last for days.

Regardless of your hair type, a little boost is always nice. While my natural hair increases in size when worn curly, I’m completely deflated after blow drying and flat ironing. My sister has a related problem where blowouts fall flat, especially at the roots.

If you experience something similar, plus hair thinning, this story has a happy ending. After trying an array of pre-stylers, creams, and mousses, we unexpectedly found that thick strands start in the shower.

Our go-to: Bumble and bumble. Thickening Plumping Mask. The bottle touts all-day volume in 2 minutes flat, and while everyone’s hair is different, we found that thickness lasts for about three days, especially in combination with Bumble and bumble. Thickening Spray.

It’s been about 2 months since we started using the products in conjunction, and we’re still surprised by the results.

After rinsing the mask out, it’s instant thickness. Formulated with plumping ingredients, including hydrolyzed rice protein plus emblica technology, both of us feel the effect of having ~more~ hair with every use, plus added bounce.

With damp hair, we spritz on the thickening spray. Note: if you have medium-thick hair and not a lot of time, proceed with caution. The bottle doesn’t lie–hair will be at full volume capacity, and I feel that my styling time is extended due to all the fluff. However, it’s likely to be your most voluminous style yet.

For fine to medium hair, apply liberally. This lightweight, residue-free pre-styler coats strands with touchably soft results. My sister concentrates placement at the roots and rakes her hair outward away from the scalp (versus downward) to create added volume and separation.

After completing our respective routines, we find that our results are consistent: full-bodied, long lasting blow outs. Added bonus: my sister claims that her roots stay lifted all day.

By the end of Day 2, we agree that our hair retains thickness, but likely due to our length (which can weigh hair down), we have a little less volume and bounce. A more “I woke up with natural volume” look rather than perfectly styled hair.

On Day 3, our hair usually gets slicked back into a style. Gathering strands into a pony or bun, I feel like I have added hair that wasn’t there before.

Our advice? Give these products a try for full-volume styles and thicker strands with staying power.
