We all have ups and downs when it comes to our fitness routines. Sometimes we work out every day, and sometimes we fall off the bandwagon and it’s hard to get back on. The one question I get asked all the time is, what are my top tips for staying fit? And over the past eight years of training clients, I have come up with top four “non-negotiable” ones. While we all know there isn’t just one way to eat or exercise, these are some of the ways that have helped to bring me and my clients fitness success.
1: Stop convincing yourself you have to love working out
When I was young, I had to go to school. I had to go to class and study—even if I didn’t like what I was learning. The same goes for fitness. Get the idea out of your head that working out is an option. Even if I’m not in love with what I’m doing, I still do it to reach my goals. There are many forms of exercise so it’s likely you'll find something that’s tolerable. But remember, you don’t have to love or even like it. You just have to do it.
2: Stay consistent!
It doesn’t matter what gets you moving, as long as you stay with it. People ask me what I do to stay fit and my answer is: I stay consistent. Truth is, there are times when I’m into boot camp classes and other times where I’m into yoga and Pilates. What matters is that my mindset stays consistent. I dedicate myself to health and have the freedom to explore different types of fitness.
3: "3 or 30"
This is the mantra I use when my workout is lacking. “3 or 30” means I have to do something active during the day that’s either three miles or 30 minutes. It may seem silly, but it works! The number three isn’t intimidating. It’s a number that lets you be consistent while still feeling like you accomplished. something It’s a good way to get back in your fitness game. Try it!
4: Ask yourself what the consequences are if you don’t work out
Answering this question is very effective. Will you think about how you should have exercised throughout the rest of the day? Will you judge everything you eat? Will it be harder to go to the gym tomorrow? I bet once you’ve answered, honestly, you'll realize it’s just better (and easier!) to get your workout done with so you can forget about it. As hard as working out can be, I always love how I feel when I’m done. In fact, I’ve never left the gym wishing I hadn’t gone.
