New York Fashion Week S/S 2012 Day 6 Recap
Published Sep 14, 2011
It was a glamorous day six at New York Fashion Week. Sophie Theallet, Oscar de la Renta, and Vera Wang all wowed with beautiful hair and makeup, bringing plenty of inspiration for the season ahead. Beautylish's Tara shares the view from backstage.
Tory Burch
NEW YORK FASHION WEEK S/S 2012
MAKEUP
A nonchalant Parisian girl was the inspiration for Tory Burch this morning. Makeup artist Diane Kendal focused on the eye, keeping it smoky and sultry with a brown, bronze smoky shade. "I was inspired by Deauville and the '20s," said Diane. "When smudging in the eye shadow," she said, "it's good to use a Q-tip to blend the color, and finish off with a brush." She used two new MAC shades, Metal X, which she blended from the center of the eye outwards, and a pale gold shadow which she applied to the inner corners. Rosy cheeks were created with a cream blush in the apples of the cheeks, and lashes were coated with two strokes of mascara.
HAIR
In keeping with the sort of Parisian hair that girls world wide are in constant lust over, hairstylist Eugene Souleiman parted hair to the side and slightly over the face, then pulled it into a low ponytail. Everything was sleek and shiny, and blow dried straight.
NAILS
Essie's celebrity manicurist Elle was inspired by Tory's Parisian inspired collection, and kept nails chic with two coats of Essie Nail Polish in Mademoiselle, a soft, almost translucent, pink.
Badgley Mischka
NEW YORK FASHION WEEK S/S 2012
MAKEUP
The look at Badgley Mischka this morning was glamour. Old Hollywood style, real woman glamour. Makeup artist Tom Pecheux was inspired by Marilyn Monroe, and the strong looks of the '50s. "I get inspired by creating fantasy through the makeup and escapism from real life," he said. The look was centered around a powerful eye brow, which Tom defined with eye shadow. He then created an elongated cat eye that arched high up to the brow, which was a direct throw back to the bygone era. Lots of mascara was piled onto lashes, and blush was peachy and high up on the cheekbones to highlight them. "For the lips," said Tom, "we're using a color called Flamingo. It's a very pretty coral."
HAIR
Hairstylist Peter Gray went for very big hair this morning. His inspiration came from the old hairstyles that used to take hours to perfect (think women prepping themselves in front of the dressing table). "It's all about celebrating a real woman," he said. "I wanted to create something big and gorgeous, something a movie star would wear." He began by separating the back section and teasing it, then rolling it into a giant French roll. The front was curled in the same technique he used at Betsy Johnson. "The key to creating old style curls," said Peter, "is all in the prep. Make sure you begin with mousse and hairspray and comb it through before curling." He used Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray and Frizz Control.
NAILS
Deborah Lippmann created a new polish for the show, called Glamorous Life. The pink, pearly shade was inspired by a rose gold Rolex, and has a luxurious sheen.
Vera Wang
NEW YORK FASHION WEEK S/S 2012
MAKEUP
A simple, fresh look was the direction at Vera Wang. Makeup artist Lucia Pieroni was inspired by an Upper East Side girl that got home from a festival and kept her makeup simple and beautiful. "I started with Clé de Peau's new Face Luminizer to give the face an all over glow," said Lucia. "I didn't want to create a bronzed look, more of a glow that came from within." She covered eyes in a soft smoky brown from Clé de Peau's new spring Eye Color Quad (out in March 2012) and left mascara out. "This girl needs to have a natural beauty," said Lucia.
HAIR
The hair at Vera Wang also emulated the organic, simple look that Vera envisioned for her collection. Hairstylist Orlando Pita parted hair in the center and slicked it back flat to the nape of the neck and used pins to hold it there, before flicking it out and coating the ends in silicone to look like water. He only used Spirulina by Byron hairspray to keep everything together.
Diego Binetti
NEW YORK FASHION WEEK S/S 2012
MAKEUP
At Diego today, it was the craziest makeup I've seen so far this week. Makeup artist James Vincent described the look as "harlequin, medieval, and carnival." Models were covered in lace stenciled face paint, there were feathers, straws and even a stuck on butterfly. The makeup was all about color, texture, and the playfulness that comes with Diego's clothes. "Every girl is different," said James, "and we really wanted a look that was pretty and delicate." Colors ranged from pinks to purples, deep greens and midnight blues. Some models had incredible lashes glued to their cheeks, and others had lace stencils and vivid painted on eye shadow.
HAIR
Hairstylist Rodney Cutler embraced the crimper at Diego, and created intricate updos. "The look is very editorial," said Rodney. "It's almost like something you'd see in Italian Vogue. We wanted something really theatrical. We based it on a French twist, and are then tweaking each models hair to make it a little different." Rodney started with hairspray and then crimped, then added more hairspray to really make the crimp pop.
NAILS
An neon pink acid washed nail with metal tips by CND was the look at Diego, and it was wild. Inspired by a creative woman that had color running into her fingers, a layer of CND Colour in Frosting Cream was applied on fingers first, then a layer of CND Colour in Raspberry Parfait was painted into the edges of the the nail. Finally, a brush dipped in acetone was placed along the pink, causing it to fade out.
Sophie Théallet
NEW YORK FASHION WEEK S/S 2012
MAKEUP
French film La Piscine was the inspiration for Sophie's collection. Clothes were a stunning array of bright colors—oranges, aquamarine blues, and deep pinks and reds—and were designed for a woman who wants to be desired. "La Piscine is the quintessential French film," said makeup artist Tom Pecheux. "We wanted the girls to look like Romy Schneider [the star] and have the same healthy, glowy look that she had. It's all about looking at a woman and thinking 'wow, she looks gorgeous.'" Tom used MAC's Feel the Heat bronzer on the apples of the cheeks and kept skin matte, not shiny. Lots of black mascara coated lashes, and a combination of three bronze eye shadows were used. He added a touch of MAC's Hush Hush lip gloss to lips, cheeks, and eyes.
HAIR
Following the La Piscine reference, hairstylist Didier Malige wanted girls to look as if they had been for a swim and combed back their hair themselves. "It's all about a feeling of nonchalance and the causal style of the South of France," he said. "This style is about a woman who is confident and doesn't need to go the hairdresser." Hair was prepped with with Aveda Pure Butter Hair Lotion and combed back with fingers into a rough bun. Didier added heaps amounts of Aveda's Grooming Clay and Aveda's Control Paste so hair looked as if it had been dried by the sun.
Oscar de la Renta
NEW YORK FASHION WEEK S/S 2012
MAKEUP
It was a completely different look for Oscar de la Renta this season, and one that stepped away from his normal classic beauty choices of red lips and slicked back hair. A natural, creamy look was seen on the girls, one that was very similar to the fresh, dewy faces that we've been seeing all week. Makeup artist Gucci Westman described the look as pure. "It's inspired by a romantic Stevie Nicks," she said. "It's really all about the skin looking really creamy and fresh. I focused on making the eye brows a little bolder and used lots of creams on the face and applied everything with my fingers. It's all about warming the product into the skin." Lips were a nude, pinky color that Gucci said she's obsessed with and she used Revlon Matte Eye Shadow on lids. For the record, the lipstick Revlon's Colorburst in Fashion's Night Pout.
HAIR
Big, bouncy curls, like the ones we saw at Rebecca Minkoff, also graced the runway at Oscar. The natural, feminine look is very new for the designer, and sets the tone for an easy-going, relaxed collection. "It's a very romantic look," said hairstylist Orlando Pita. "I didn't use any product on the hair, I just separated sections of it and created a zig-zag pattern around two bobby pins which we left in the girls hair for about an hour. Right before the show, we removed the pins and brushed out the hair to create the waves. Two sections of hair were pulled back from both temples and pinned in the back."
NAILS
Chanel's Vamp was used on fingers and toes for a sophisticated, elegant, and grown up look.
Narciso Rodriguez
NEW YORK FASHION WEEK S/S 2012
MAKEUP
The look was simple at Narciso in order to show off the most important part of the show- the clothes. Makeup artist Dick Page kept skin matte and used a prototype for the cream shimmering base eye color (without the shimmer!) on eyes and lids. Eye lashes were bare without mascara or liner, and brows were filled in so they look defined in the catwalk. "When defining brows," said Dick, "use a spoolie brush and a fluffy angled brush."
HAIR
Hair was the colorful part of the beauty look, and was "the most daring style I've created so far for Narciso," said hairstylist Eugene Souleiman. Hair was pulled back with a comb so you could see the indentations, and pulled into a French braid that was modernized with a slightly off center placement. Eugene then sprayed the front of each model's head in a different color and finished off with a spritz (or 5) of Wella's hairspray. "I was inspired by cyclists' helmets," he said. He swapped between yellow, white, blue and neon green hair to correlate with the outfits.
NAILS
Deborah Lippmann created Waking up in Vegas exclusively for Narciso, a slate gray shade that she topped with a super shiny top coat, her must have product for fashion week.
