Even though the elusive cutepolish has only been uploading video tutorials on Youtube since February 2010, she has managed to gain a subscriber count of over 330,000! With such easy and cute designs as the Hello Kitty French Nails and Newspaper Nail Art, it’s not hard to see why she has such a huge following. Beautylish caught up with the mysterious guru to find out her absolute favorite base coat and so much more!
Q: Where do you get your inspiration for the manicures you create?
Inspiration can be found anywhere and everywhere! I've found that since I started my nail art channel, I am more open to finding the inspiration all around me. Whether I'm going for a walk outside, shopping in the mall, dreaming at night, or reading comments from my lovely subscribers, I am always inspired to create new, simple and cute nail art designs to share online.
Q: How long does it usually take to create them?
All of my nail art designs vary in the amount of time it takes to create them. Still, with that being said, the majority of the designs I create are relatively easy and boast simplicity. On average, they can take from 20 minutes to 60 minutes to create.
Q: Of the nail tutorials you have done
thus far, which is your favorite and why?
My absolute favorite nail art tutorial that I've uploaded is the Newspaper Nails. The reason I enjoy this particular one so much is because of the ratio between the amount of work put into it and the exquisite look of the finished product. The newspaper manicure is so simple to create that even someone who has never done any nail art before can easily create this design. It can be done very quickly, and the outcome is such an amazing looking manicure that it will have people stopping you when you're out in public just to see your nails!
Q: What's your full process from
beginning to end of making a tutorial?
Believe it or not, the full process of the creation of my videos is a long one, despite the fact that they are only one to three minutes long! It all begins with an idea. As mentioned earlier, the idea for a design can come from many different sources. Once I have an idea, I begin creating a bunch of different designs using that theme. Next, I choose my favorite design out of the practice ones I created, and I share that design with my subscribers. I begin the filming process by setting up my tripod, lights, camera, tools, and polishes. Once I've finished filming myself creating the new manicure, I take some photos of it. Then I go to my computer and start editing the video and adding my voice-over. Finally, I get to upload the finished nail art video for all my subscribers to see! This makes the process well worth it, because I love to see how excited so many girls get when they see that a new cutepolish design has been uploaded. I am pretty sure that my favorite comments to get are those such as, "I literally SCREAMED and ran around the house when I saw you uploaded this new design!!!"
Q: Do you have any advice to other Beauties wanting to create nail tutorials?
Go for it! If it's something you would enjoy doing, then, by all means, try it out. Do what makes you happy in life, and share your individual artistic abilities and talents with the world.
Q: How did you get started uploading video
tutorials online?
Nail art was a big hobby of mine, and I really enjoyed creating new designs each week. My cute nail designs were getting a lot of public attention, and I encouraged a lot of people to try them out, but their response would always be, "Oh, I could never do that! It's way too hard for me." So, I started the cutepolish channel on YouTube to show everyone that nail art can be easy and simple to create! I wanted to inspire other girls to get in on the fun that is nail art!
Q: What is your favorite base, topcoat, and nail polish brand?
My current favorite base coat and topcoat are Sally Hansen's Diamond Strength Instant Nail Hardener and Essie's Good to Go, respectively. Some of my current favorite nail polish brands are OPI, China Glaze, Sally Hansen, and Sinful Colors.
Q: Do you believe that nail designs have seasons and you should only attempt them then?
The majority of my designs can be worn at anytime during the year. The few designs that I would only wear during a specific season would be my holiday designs such as candy canes, holiday lights, etc.
Q: What do you think of the huge growth of nail art?
It's absolutely amazing! I am very happy to see that more and more people have adopted this hobby, and that they love to create their very own nail art designs. It is just so much more interesting to see a manicure with nail art on it, instead of just a plain color. Go ahead, girls --- turn your nails into your very own personal canvases for creating art! Not only will it make you feel great about your nails, and give you more self-confidence, but it will also serve as a great conversation piece!
