Beauty Product Reviews
Very Dry, Cracks and Crumbles
I was really excited to see that JS was releasing lip liners, so I didn’t hesitate to grab 4 of them the minute they were available on Beautylish. I’m a fan of several of his liquid lipsticks, although not all because the formula is very inconsistent across shades. I never imagined that I would have issues with a lip liner. I ordered Androgyny, Celebrity Skin, Unicorn Blood, and Red Rum. I tried Androgyny and Celebrity Skin before giving up and returning them all. The lip liners are incredibly dry on the lips, worse than the driest liquid lipstick you can imagine. They immediately cracked and crumbled, and you could actually see the dry crumbles around my lips even after applying lipstick. I literally couldn’t stand the feel of them on my lips. I always hydrate my lips before applying my lip liner and liquid lipstick so that wasn’t the issue. There are way too many great options for lip liners to settle for this subpar quality.
The only reason I’m giving the product 2 stars is because of the packaging. It’s really beautiful, and I think JS did a great job to make this product stand out among the other brands. At the same time, nobody else you encounter will know what the packaging looks like. People only know how your lips appear to them in person. For that reason, I unfortunately cannot recommend this product. I’m really disappointed because I had high hopes for these. I didn’t imagine that someone could mess up a lip liner, but evidently it’s possible. From now on, I’ll stick with brands like Bite Beauty and Make Up Forever, both of which make creamy and long-lasting formulas that aren’t dry and last all day.
Great for Tanned/Darker Skin Tones - Not for Me
This palette was long-awaited by many of us, and I grabbed it the moment it was available on advanced sale (note: I didn't purchase from Beautylish). The Jaclyn Hill palette was one of my favorites, and you can almost always trust the quality of Becca... minus the little debacle over the Jaclyn eyeshadow palette. At first swipe, I thought this was pretty on the back of my hand. The quality is what I've come to expect from Becca. This palette does have an existing highlighter shade - Rose Gold. The other 3 shades (1 highlighter, 1 bronzer, and 1 blush) are supposed to be new. However, I took out my Jaclyn palette to compare and saw some similarities. The blush is the exact shade in the Jaclyn palette with a different name and finish. The pink blush in Jaclyn's palette is a regular finish blush while the one in the Chrissy palette is a luminous finish. Same shade though. There is no noticeable difference between the bronzers. If anything, there may be 1 shade of difference which isn't easily detectable.
The final straw for me was when I applied the products to my face. This isn't a reason to give the product a low review, but it's something that everyone should take into consideration before purchasing. This product is intended for people with darker medium/tan/or darker skin tones. If you have fair, light, or light-to-medium skin, it will NOT work for you! Trust me! You could purchase it and use the highlighters as a blush or blush topper, but that's the only way you will be able to use this. I made the mistake of applying the highlighter to my upper cheek area, and it was sooo dark! I looked like a clown. My skin isn't THAT fair either. haha I wiped my face off with a microfiber cloth and returned it to the store. The girls at Sephora were SHOCKED that I was returning it. Their mouths were literally open. But this product wasn't meant for me, and I couldn't justify keeping it with all the above factors considered
A Glittery Mess
This will be my last Jeffree Star purchase until I can be assured that the quality of his products has significant improved. I have several of his lipsticks from earlier in 2016, and I love them. During the summer of 2016, quality took a down-hill turn, and there have been significant issues with everything.... the summer lipstick collection, the winter lipstick collection, and now with this collab.
The Eclipse highlighter is a great concept, but it's actually horrible. This doesn't even give a good finger swatch. It's dry, chunky, and glittery. Definitely not smooth, creamy, blinding, or consistent. It won't even lift up onto a brush. I have tried all kinds of brushes. I have over 50 brushes in my collection. When you dip a brush into this, it literally throws glitter all over the place. It feels as if the pan has been sitting open and dried out over an extended period of time. It doesn't work with brush or finger application. I'm honestly sad because I think the color of this could be pretty.... if I could get pigment to apply instead of sporadic glitter flakes.
I just can't justify supporting this brand anymore. It's not consistent, and little attention is paid to quality.
Bad Formula - Dry Chunk of Glitter
I was looking forward to the new Eclipse collab highlighter because the shade appeared to be a better match for my skin tone compared to the others. You get a lot of product for the money, compared to other brands. However, something is really wrong with this formula. It's completely unusable, and I'll have to return it. Thank goodness for Beautylish's superior customer service. You can't go wrong when ordering from here. The highlighter is very dry. It will not grab onto a brush.... any brush. It won't even swatch with a finger. I've tried several different brush styles, ranging in size, density, and firmness. When I swirl a brush in the pan, it literally flicks glitter all over the place. It won't grab on to the brush where I can apply any product to my face (or on the hand for a swatch). It's like a dried out block of glitter. No thanks!
I feel like the quality of Jeffree Star has done down quite a bit with his last couple of LE releases. I hope he will focus more on quality in the future, rather than assuming customers will buy for a celebrity name only. The products used to be great, but not anymore.
Experienced Chemical Burns
I'm a skincare junkie, and my skin is accustomed to powerful ingredients. On paper, this Vitamin C suspension should be the most effective and powerful formula you can buy, especially for the money. It contains 23% of l-absorbic acid which is the most effective form of vitamin c for skincare purposes. It's also very strong, much stronger than most other Vitamin c formulas available on the market, which means that you WILL feel this working when applied. That didn't scare me away because I already use a 22% vitamin c formula compounded by my pharmacist. However, this was different, and within 2 days I found myself treating chemical burns on parts of my face. It hurt and took a few weeks to heal completely. I don't even have sensitive skin. I have dry skin with no sensitivity or acne issues. I've certainly never had an issue with a skincare product burning thru my skin before this.
If you're not accustomed to a real l-absorbic acid suspension like this, it's very different than any other Vitamin c serum or cream you've likely used. This didn't bother me because I already used a product like this, but some of you may not like it. The l-absorbic acid powder doesn't fully dissolve in the cream suspension, making it very gritty when applied. I usually apply the cream, let it absorb for 20-30 minutes, and then apply another serum or moisturizer over it (mixed with 2 drops of a beauty oil) to help the remaining particles absorb into the skin. Don't try to wear this in the morning under makeup. It won't work! Only use at night before bedtime. It will feel very strong and likely burn for a few minutes. Some burning is ok, but if you feel it burning beyond 5 minutes or so, be careful or you may end up with actual burns like I did. I can't recommend this at all. Instead I recommend the Drunk Elephant C Firma or a cheaper product with l-absorbic acid is the Vitamin C by Timeless.
No! Caused Deep Acne in 2 Days!
I performed a test of 3 products from The Ordinary, and this was one of them. I have dry skin and don't have any issues with sensitivity or acne. However, after just 2 days of using this product, I developed issues with deep, painful acne that took over 3 weeks and professional treatment to heal. I've never experienced this issue with a skincare product before. I thought these products contained pure ingredients without any fillers, but that's obviously not the case. Something causes an immediate reaction to occur. I have received messages from many other people saying the same thing, after I wrote a review on my blog and Instagram, so I'm obviously not the only one who has experienced issues with this product and the brand in general.
Inconsistent Formula - Varies by Shade
When I received this bundle, I intially swatched it on the back of my hand and thought the entire collection was just stunning. I thought Jeffree did a great job on the collection overall..... that is until I sat down to actually apply each shade one by one to my lips and saw how they applied, looked, and performed there. That's when reality set in and disappointment struck. I have a very large Jeffree Star collection, and I'm a huge fan of his lipsticks. The formula in this collection is different from his regular collection. Even within this holiday collection, the formula varies by shade. There's a few hits in this collection, but there's also several big misses. My favorites are Pumpkin Pie, Deceased, and Sagittarius (Deceased and Sagittarius are similar but there are noticeable differences when they are applied and dry down completely). Deceased is more of a greyish purple, and it's so pretty on the lips. I love the shade Designer Blood, BUT.... it bleeds VERY badly outside the lip line. It's impossible to apply with a clean line. You have to use a lip liner and then clean up the edges with foundation or concealer. The original shade Unicorn Blood did not have this issue at all. I'm not sure if it's an issue with the formula, the applicator, or a combination of both. I have no opinion either way on Crocodile Tears. This isn't a "wearable" shade for me, and I knew when I purchased this bundle that I wouldn't be wearing this one. I did try it on, and the formula seems pretty good compared to some of the other shades.
There are significant formula issues with the shades Chrysanthemum and Check Mate. Chrysanthemum is extremely streaky and applies completely sheer, not opaque whatsoever. It looks absolutely horrible on the lips by itself. The only way I could make it look halfway decent was to apply another color as a base color (such as Celebrity Skin) and apply Chrysanthemum as a sheer topper over it. Other than that, it's unwearable and shouldn't have been released in this condition. It doesn't look anything like it did in Jeffree's swatch video on YouTube. Check Mate also has significant formula issues. It is so thick that it's impossible to apply and spread evenly onto the lips. It applies streaky and looks horrible. I don't know if there's a way to dilute it down with something, but it feels so thick as if it's been sitting on a shelf for over a year. Something just isn't right. I've never experienced issues like this with Jeffree's line before, and I'm so disappointed.
Overall, I would not have purchased this bundle again if I knew about all of the issues it has, and I will be contacting customer service to see what my options are for returning the set. I don't think it's worth spending $100 just for 2 or 3 shades out of the entire collection, while the rest of them have issues of some sort. It's unfortunate because I really do love Jeffree Star liquid lipsticks and have always supported this brand. I just feel like there should have been better quality control for this collection before its release. Saying that, the shipping from Beautylish was phenomenal!!! I ordered on Black Friday, and received my order on the next Tuesday. Meanwhile, other people who ordered from JS's website are still waiting for their orders, 2 weeks later. Thank you Beautylish!!!
Doesn't Take Off Makeup Very Well - Overhyped
This product was a huge disappointment for me. I decided to take the plunge and buy the big 3 pack during the Black Friday sale. Big mistake! All the reviews were phenomenal, so I really thought this product would at least remove a basic liquid lipstick swatch from the back of my hand or lips. It doesn't. I had been using the Micellar Cleansing Water from Garnier. It's a fraction of the cost and available at any drugstore. It worked perfectly, but the reviews for Bioderma made me feel like I was missing out on something even better. I don't know what I'm going to do with 3 bottles now. I had to scrub and scrub to get lipstick and eyeshadow swatches off of my skin, so I absolutely don't trust this product to cleanse off a full face of makeup at night or cleanse my skin in any way.
Although this product doesn't work for me, I must say that the shipping and service from Beautylish is pretty amazing. I love the fast shipping and follow-through communication they provide until the product is delivered. I love and trust Beautylish as a company..... just don't like this particular product at all.
