This is a huge personal and cultural finance issue that will impede your financial stability if you are not careful. Worst of all, money destorys relationships with family and friends all the time.

Personally, I never lend money I expect to get back unless I'm ok with ruining the relationship, which is never the case. I also never give or lend what I cannot afford (i.e. no co-signing, no gift giving outside my budget).
