So when I buy foundation, sometimes my skin colour isn't available and there is usually one that is a bit too light and the one after that is a bit too dark. At times like this, should I get the lighter one or the darker one. I know you can mix foundations and stuff but knowing me, I'd make a right mess out of it.

Well I once got a foundation that was a little too dark but I still use it! I just make sure to blend it really well, sometimes it's difficult finding the right color! :)

You can mix a too light and too dark together to create a new color that is your skin tone. Just take scoops and mix together in a little bowl until you get the right shade then funnel it into a little squeeze bottle. That's how I do it and it is horrifically messy but it work well! Also, if a foundation is a bit too dark you can mix some moisturizer in with it to lighten it up.

I have the same issue! I was given a Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer and it's a shade off.
I personally don't like mixing moisturizer/powders because then it messes up the formula and just looks patchy and uneven!
So I got a little bit creative...
I have a concealer that's a shade lighter - and my foundation is obviously darker. So instead I just contour and highlight - saves me all the work and no one ever guesses that my foundation was too dark to begin with.

You can also use a lighter or darker powder, so if your foundation is too dark wear a lighter powder and visa-versa, hope this helps :)
