I'm getting gel nails on next Friday for my birthday and I was wondering if there is any way of taking them off without damaging your nails?

There are ways that are less damaging than others, but gel nails do really damage your nails and I don't recommend them.

And if they are damaging why do you think the profesional salon sells the gel?

Nail salons do a lot of things that are damaging to nails. Acrylics, for example. But gel nails, in general, will make your nails thin and weak, will make them peel once you take them off, leave your nails an uneven texture after removal, and will make your nails look awful. I have had so many terrible experiences with gel nails, I really don't think they're worth it at all.

Just because an item is being sold to the public doesn't necessarily make it less damaging. the point is to make money.

So there's no way I could get them taken off without them damaging my nails?

Getting them put on actually damages your nails, so there's really no winning unfortunately.

I think I'm just going to get them this one time and them il go back and get them taken off by a professional and get my nails filed and painted normally again

Sounds good :) I'm just wary of them because I had them almost constantly for about 6 months maybe 4-5 years ago, and my nails still aren't okay.

I had gel nails a couple months ago and my nails peeled for a while and one of my pinky nails is still really messed up. I didnt take them off correctly though.

I do a no chip and while the polish is on, my nails are harder and so I don't have to use tips...unless I break one. I love it.
